Role Description
The Cytogenetics FISH Technologist will be an integral part of a small team which is responsible for all aspects of daily workflow in the Cytogenetics wet lab and FISH analysis. Expected to have excellent communication and organizational skills as well as utilize complex problem-solving skills to aid in completing expected tasks as well as resolving potential workflow issues.
Responsibilities
- Perform Fluorescent In-Situ Hybridization (FISH) testing on blood and bone marrow samples while following the laboratory’s procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reporting and maintaining records of patient results
- Performs proficiency testing samples in the same manner as the patient specimens
- Adhere to the laboratory’s quality control policies and document all QC activities, instrument and procedural calibrations and instrument maintenance
- Be able to identify problems that may adversely affect test performance or reporting of test results and either correct the problem or notify the appropriate supervisor, along with documentation of the all actions taken
- Perform all benchwork in compliance with laboratory policy and within quality guidelines
- Works with laboratory team to complete all expected tasks in an accurate and timely manner
- Works effectively as a team member within the department and with other departments to provide quality service through communication, cooperation and collaboration
- Maintains flexibility required to adapt to laboratory needs as related to testing and scheduling.
- Maintains and troubleshoots instruments as needed
- Report and escalate issues to teammates, supervisor, and management as needed
- Manage Inventory
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Life Sciences) or related area is required
- ASCP certification preferred
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills
- Sense of ownership and integrity of their work.
- A demonstrated ability to work as part of a team
- Demonstrated organizational skills; including but not limited to attention to detail and multitasking
- Familiarity with Metasystems a plus
