Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Lead Estimator to manage and oversee the estimating process for construction projects from pre-bid through contract award. This role is responsible for developing accurate, competitive cost estimates, mentoring junior estimators, and working closely with project management, operations, and leadership to support strategic bidding decisions.
The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, deadline-driven, and has strong knowledge of construction means and methods, pricing, and risk evaluation.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the preparation of detailed cost estimates for public and private construction projects
- Review plans, specifications, addenda, and contract requirements
- Develop quantity takeoffs, pricing, and bid summaries
- Solicit, analyze, and negotiate subcontractor and supplier pricing
- Evaluate project risks, opportunities, and constructability issues
- Coordinate with operations and project management to validate production rates and schedules
- Mentor and review work from junior estimators
- Prepare bid presentations and support bid review meetings
- Maintain historical cost data and improve estimating procedures
- Support value engineering and alternate pricing when required
Qualifications
- 5+ years of construction estimating experience (heavy civil preferred)
- Prior experience as a Senior or Lead Estimator
- Strong understanding of construction contracts, drawings, and specifications
- Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., HCSS, HeavyBid, Excel, or similar)
- Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple bids and deadlines simultaneously
Preferred Experience
- Heavy civil, marine, dredging, or infrastructure projects
- DOT / USACE / public works bidding experience
- Leadership or mentoring experience
- Familiarity with cost databases and equipment rate structures
