The New Orleans African American Museum of Art, Culture and History (NOAAM) is dedicated to the preservation, presentation, and interpretation of the African and African American culture and heritage of New Orleans and the African Diaspora.
Curatorial Fellow
The New Orleans African American Museum is accepting applications for the Curatorial Fellowship, a four-month learning opportunity designed for university students or emerging professionals interested in museums, archives, and curatorial work.
Fellows will gain hands-on experience in archives, collection management, and exhibition research. They will work alongside curatorial staff on current and upcoming projects, including Ancestral Odyssey, Katrina and The Ones Who Returned, and other future curatorial studio initiatives.
This fellowship is structured to provide mentorship and professional growth, offering academic credit where applicable and direct exposure to the daily work of a museum.
Fellowship Learning Goals & Responsibilities
- Learn and assist with registering, cataloguing, and organizing items in the museum’s collections.
- Support curatorial staff with research and writing for exhibitions and publications.
- Contribute to the preparation and planning of exhibitions and curatorial studio projects.
- Collaborate with staff across departments (Communications, Education, Development, etc.) to understand how exhibitions connect to broader museum work.
- Participate in meetings and discussions to gain insight into museum operations and curatorial decision-making.
Qualifications
- Current university student or recent graduate (preferred fields: art history, museum studies, African American studies, history, or related areas).
- Interest in African American and African Diaspora art, culture, and history.
- Strong research and writing skills.
- Willingness to learn, collaborate, and contribute to team projects.
- Strong organizational and communication skills.
