Founded by 19th-century Shakespearean actor Edwin Booth, The Players is a 136-year-old private membership club celebrating the arts. Located at 16 Gramercy Park South in a beautiful 1847 mansion overlooking Gramercy park, our National Historic Landmark clubhouse—featuring interiors designed by Stanford White—offers a uniquely prestigious environment.
We are seeking a highly skilled Controller to be the financial compass of our historic club. In this vital role, you will ensure accuracy, drive efficiency, and optimize performance. What You Will Do
Financial Management, Budgeting & Strategic Reporting
- Lead the Financial Narrative: Prepare and manage the monthly trial balance, income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow statements.
- Drive Data-Driven Decisions: Research, draft, and compile insightful financial reports for the General Manager, Managing Committee, and Board of Directors.
- Annual Budgeting: Lead the financial modeling and projection of the club's annual operating budget for the following year.
- Event Financial Analysis: Generate, review, and present comprehensive Profit & Loss (P&L) reports immediately following member events.
- Sales Forecasting: Assist management with financial projections and modeling for upcoming sales events.
- Manage Cash Flow: Produce detailed weekly cash flow reports to keep the club in a strong financial position.
- Leverage Technology: Process End of Month reports seamlessly utilizing the NorthStar software platform.
Auditing, Compliance & Collaboration
- Ensure Integrity: Conduct internal audits to guarantee financial accuracy and compliance with club policies.
- Partner with Experts: Collaborate with external auditors and accountants to assemble audit and tax reporting materials, ensuring our procedures align with industry best practices.
- Oversee Expenditures: Carefully audit all cash and charge expenditures to safeguard club resources.
Accounts Management & Reconciliation
- Maintain Accurate Ledgers: Oversee monthly reconciliations across receivables, payables, bank accounts, assets, and wage accounts.
- Optimize Receivables & Collections: Manage accounts receivable and actively assist with collections, focusing on timely follow-ups and ensuring strict alignment with club policies.
- Track Assets: Maintain fixed asset ledgers and prepare depreciation schedules for accurate monthly entries.
Payroll & Vendor Relations
- Champion the Team: Process weekly payroll in coordination with our provider (Paychex), auditing and approving it in compliance with club policies.
- Manage Partnerships: Compile, approve, and manage vendor credit applications and process all invoices for timely payment.
Daily Financial Oversight & Member Experience
- Safeguard Assets: Manage bank accounts, ensure proper daily bank deposits for accounts receivable, and supervise the drawing of checks.
- Support the Membership: Maintain an up-to-date member classification list and provide excellent service by addressing member billing inquiries via phone and email.
- Empower Department Heads: Inform and advise other leaders on the financial aspects of their departments to foster a cohesive management team.
- Streamline Operations: Coordinate the workflow of member payments, banquet sales, and POS systems, including processing the End of Day for à la carte services.
Experience
- 5–8+ years of progressive accounting experience, ideally with 2–3+ years in a controller or assistant controller role
- Experience in a private club, hospitality, or membership-based organization strongly preferred
- Experience managing multiple revenue streams: dues, F&B, events, guest fees
- Experience working with a General Manager, Board Treasurer, and/or Finance Committee
- Experience with UBIT tracking and reporting for nonmember revenue a plus
Education
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA not required; candidates with club industry certifications (e.g., CCM – Certified Club Manager, or coursework through CMAA, the Club Management Association of America) are a plus
- Continuing education in hospitality or club-specific accounting practices is a plus
Skills not required but a plus
- Club management systems — Experience with platforms like Northstar in addition to general ledger systems
- Membership-based accounting Tracking dues, initiation fees, assessments, and member billing cycles
- UBIT knowledge (Unrelated Business Income Tax) — understanding of the 15% nonmember income limit and how to track member vs. nonmember revenue separately
Compensation & Benefits
