About the Academy of Craft Training
The Academy of Craft Training prepares high school students for careers in commercial construction and the skilled trades through hands-on training, industry partnerships, internships, and direct pathways to employment.
ACT hires instructors directly from industry. Previous classroom teaching experience is not required. We are looking for an experienced commercial construction professional who knows the work, can lead young people, and wants to pass the craft on to the next generation.
Position Summary
ACT is seeking a full-time Commercial Construction Instructor for its Central Alabama campus in Montgomery.
This position is ideal for an experienced commercial carpenter, foreman, superintendent, field supervisor, or crew leader who enjoys training apprentices, mentoring younger employees, and developing construction teams.
Responsibilities
- Provide hands-on classroom, lab, and simulated jobsite instruction
- Teach commercial construction tools, materials, methods, and jobsite practices
- Teach wood framing, metal-stud framing, construction layout, and plan reading
- Teach jobsite safety and proper use of hand and power tools
- Prepare students for internships and entry-level commercial construction careers
- Plan and organize daily classroom and lab activities
- Track student skill development, attendance, and job readiness
- Mentor students in work ethic, reliability, communication, teamwork, and professionalism
- Coordinate with commercial contractors to support internships and full-time employment
- Participate in jobsite visits, industry advisory meetings, student recruitment, and workforce-development activities
ACT instructors are responsible not only for instruction, but also for student development and coordination with industry partners to support internships and employment placement.
Required Experience and Skills
- Five or more years of commercial construction experience
- Experience in a leadership role such as foreman, superintendent, lead carpenter, supervisor, or crew leader preferred
- Proficiency in wood framing and metal-stud framing
- Ability to read and interpret commercial construction plans
- Experience performing commercial construction layout
- Strong understanding of jobsite safety and OSHA standards
- Experience training, supervising, or mentoring apprentices and crew members
- Strong communication, organization, and leadership skills
Preferred Qualifications
- NCCER Instructor Certification (not required)
- Experience using NCCER curriculum
- OSHA 30 Construction
- Journeyman-level carpentry or construction experience
- Additional experience with drywall, ceilings, doors and hardware, concrete, cabinetry, interior finishes, or general jobsite coordination
NCCER certification is preferred, but ACT provides training and support for instructors who need to obtain it.
Work Environment
- Full-time, Monday through Friday, daytime schedule
- Two waves of instruction from 8-10 am and 12-2 pm
- Classroom, construction lab, and simulated jobsite environments
- Occasional visits to commercial jobsites and industry-partner locations
- Must be able to stand for extended periods and lift materials weighing up to 50 pounds
ACT’s established instructor schedule is 7:30 a.m.–3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.
