The Safety Manager is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining safety programs at our chemical storage and distribution terminal. This role ensures compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and PHMSA regulations, leads process safety and environmental initiatives, and works closely with terminal leadership and staff to build a strong, proactive safety culture. The Safety Manager plays a critical role in preventing incidents, protecting employees, and ensuring the safe handling of chemical products on site.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop, implement, and maintain site safety programs and procedures in compliance with OSHA, EPA, DOT, and PHMSA requirements.
- Lead process safety management (PSM) activities, including process hazard analyses, mechanical integrity, and management of change.
- Conduct regular safety audits, inspections, and job hazard analyses across the terminal.
- Lead incident investigations, identify root causes, and implement corrective and preventive actions.
- Deliver safety training programs for employees and contractors, including new hire orientation and ongoing refresher training.
- Maintain and update emergency response plans; lead emergency drills and coordinate with local emergency responders.
- Track and report safety metrics, including incident rates, near misses, and leading indicators, to site and corporate leadership.
- Manage environmental compliance programs, including SPCC plans, air permits, wastewater discharge, and regulatory reporting.
- Partner with terminal management to promote a strong safety culture and drive employee engagement in safety initiatives.
- Ensure proper maintenance and use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety systems on site.
- Support permitting, inspections, and audits conducted by regulatory agencies.
- Maintain accurate safety records, training documentation, and regulatory files.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- 5+ years of safety management experience, ideally within chemical storage, distribution, terminal, or related industrial environment.
- Strong working knowledge of OSHA, EPA, DOT, and PHMSA regulations, including process safety management (PSM) requirements.
- Experience leading incident investigations and developing corrective action plans.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or similar certification preferred.
- Strong training and presentation skills, with the ability to engage employees at all levels.
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, with strong record-keeping and reporting abilities.
- Ability to respond to site emergencies, including after-hours availability as needed.
