Position Overview
Producers Cooperative Association is seeking a highly motivated and knowledgeable Garden Center Department Manager to lead one of our most visible and customer-focused departments.
This is not a lawn maintenance or landscaping position. This role combines retail management, horticultural knowledge, customer service, inventory management, merchandising, and team leadership in a fast-paced agricultural retail environment.
The successful candidate will spend significant time on the sales floor and in the nursery assisting customers, identifying plant and lawn issues, merchandising products, unloading and handling inventory, and supporting department operations. This is a hands-on leadership position that requires balancing customer interaction, employee supervision, purchasing, inventory management, and administrative responsibilities.
The ideal candidate is energized by a fast-moving environment, comfortable managing diverse responsibilities, and genuinely passionate about plants, gardening, and serving customers well.
Key Responsibilities
Department Leadership & Operations
Lead the day-to-day operations of the Garden Center Department.
- Supervise, train, schedule, and develop department team members.
- Delegate responsibilities effectively while maintaining accountability and performance standards.
- Foster a positive, customer-focused team culture.
- Maintain department appearance, organization, and merchandising standards.
Nursery & Product Management
- Purchase, receive, manage, and maintain live plant inventory including annuals, perennials, shrubs, fruit trees, vegetable plants, and seasonal offerings.
- Manage hardgoods inventory including fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, soils, mulches, seed, irrigation supplies, and gardening tools.
- Work closely with vendors, distributors, and company buyers to maintain inventory and introduce new products.
- Monitor product performance, inventory turns, margins, and seasonal demand.
Customer Service & Technical Support
- Assist customers with plant selection, gardening projects, and product recommendations.
- Diagnose and provide guidance regarding common plant, lawn, insect, disease, and weed issues.
- Recommend appropriate treatment programs and product applications.
- Build strong relationships with members and customers through exceptional service and technical expertise.
- Stay informed on industry trends, products, and best management practices.
Sales & Business Management
- Analyze sales performance and inventory data to maximize profitability.
- Develop merchandising, promotional, and seasonal sales strategies.
- Manage pricing, displays, and product placement.
- Administer manufacturer programs, rebates, reports, and regulatory requirements accurately and timely.
- Assist with management of other assigned departments as needed.
Qualifications
Preferred Experience
- Experience in horticulture, nursery operations, garden center management, agricultural retail, greenhouse production, landscape supply, or related fields.
- Experience leading, supervising, or managing employees.
- Strong knowledge of plants, gardening practices, fertilizers, herbicides, insecticides, and related lawn and garden products.
- Understanding of agricultural, ranching, or farming operations is highly desirable.

Work Schedule
This position requires flexibility to work retail hours, including some Saturdays and seasonal peak periods. Spring and fall are our busiest seasons and require a strong commitment to customer service and department execution.
