As NYPA’s technical and digital landscape continues to evolve to ensure we meet the increasing demand for clean energy across New York State, the Senior Cloud Orchestration Automation Engineer will play a pivotal role in advancing automation throughout our infrastructure. This position is essential to the successful modernization and efficiency of our IT operations.
The Senior Cloud Orchestration Automation Engineer is a key member of the Cloud and Core Services Architecture & Automation team. This role focuses on designing, implementing, and maintaining secure, scalable, and fully automated cloud infrastructure across hybrid and multi‑cloud environments.
Core Responsibilities
- Lead automation initiatives across the IT organization to increase efficiency and reduce manual processes.
- Work closely with Infrastructure, Networking, Application Development, and other IT teams to design and implement automated workflows, using strong communication and relationship‑building skills.
- Support the AI Center of Excellence (AI CoE) by streamlining the delivery of AI use cases and enabling scalable, repeatable solution patterns.
The ideal candidate has deep experience with:
- Infrastructure‑as‑code (IaC), workflow orchestration, and cloud‑native automation
- Tools such as Terraform, Ansible, ARM templates, GitHub/GitHub Actions
- Advanced scripting in Python and other programming languages
- DevSecOps principles, including secure‑by‑design practices, policy‑as‑code, CI/CD pipelines with integrated security, and secrets/certificate management
- The candidate will be responsible for building resilient, compliant, and highly repeatable automation frameworks aligned with enterprise cybersecurity and digital architecture standards.
Key Activities
- Partner with teams across Infrastructure, Application Development, and Networking to automate processes and develop joint automation initiatives.
- Automate provisioning, scaling, configuration, and operational tasks across hybrid environments.
- Develop infrastructure‑as‑code using Terraform, Ansible, and related tools; maintain strong Python scripting capabilities.
- Manage automation scripts, workflows, and versioning using GitHub.
- Collaborate with the AI CoE to support new use cases by provisioning cloud infrastructure, establishing governance, and assisting with proof‑of‑concept efforts.
- Build automated provisioning and deployment workflows that enable rapid, scalable solution delivery across multiple use cases.
- Conduct thorough analysis of client/user requirements, design, develop and test the software to meet defined specifications including the ability to uncover, comprehend, and document complex business requirements, challenges, and processes.

- Assist with developing and finalizing RFIs, RFPs and questionnaires in conjunction with IT partners and business stakeholders.
- Develop designs, layouts, and documentation to identify project requirements and how specific aspects will be integrated cohesively.
- Ensure project teams uncover, comprehend, and document complex business requirements, challenges, and processes.
- Responsible for the technical relationship with IT and Business leads, including managing product and solution briefings, proof-of-concept work, coordination of additional technical resources, and obtaining business requirements and translates these into a Solution Design.
- Remain abreast of industry news, technology products, platforms, and partners to ensure you and your team provide and maintain a deep industry and ecosystem expertise.
- Demonstrated ability to lead a project team's effort to engineer and deliver EA deliverables with minimal supervision.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively communicate with a diverse group of customers, partners, and colleagues.
- Demonstrated ability to quickly learn, understand, and work with new emerging technologies, methodologies, and solutions.
- Experience of identifying and selecting software solutions to business needs including Commercial of the Shelf (COTS), SaaS and PaaS applications.
- Knowledgeable in advanced concepts of cloud computing, datacenter consolidation, IT infrastructure services, cyber security, data management services, etc.
- Knowledge of advanced network administration and security principles and practices related to architecture.
- Advanced knowledge of most industry-standard solution engineering, application architecture and systems integration approaches and concepts.
- Bachelor’s degree in an IT related field preferred.
- Minimum 6 years or more experience of providing solution engineering, application architecture and systems integration services for technology projects preferred.
- Experience in analyzing business and application requirements and present architectural solutions.
- Knowledge of EA and SA principles and frameworks.
- Professional experience in architecting/operating solutions built on public cloud platforms with Architecture certification preferred.
Overnight travel to the various NYPA locations within New York State.
The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $145,000 - $181,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
