Position Title: Director of Human Resources
Work Schedule: Full-time; 12-month position; evening and weekend work required
Key responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Lead, mentor, and elevate the HR team (including the HR Manager and Benefits Coordinator), fostering a collaborative environment and a culture of continuous improvement
- Oversee a comprehensive, welcoming new employee onboarding program that accelerates time-to-productivity and drives long-term retention
- Direct the strategic administration and compliance of all comprehensive benefit plans, including health (medical/dental/vision), life insurance, and complex pension/retirement programs, ensuring competitive offerings that attract and retain top talent
- Field a variety of questions related to benefits, compensation, and policy and contract interpretation
- Conduct investigations of employee relations matters related to faculty and staff and recommend resolution to applicable Vice President
- Assist managers in setting expectations and issuing of discipline as needed
- Partner closely with leadership and legal counsel to prepare for and participate in union contract negotiations; ensure consistent administration, interpretation, and compliance of all collective bargaining agreements across the organization
- Oversee day-to-day labor relations, serving as the HR expert on union contract interpretation, managing grievance procedures, and advising managers on maintaining productive, collaborative relationships with unionized staff
- Respond promptly to all unemployment insurance requests and represent the College at hearings
- Develop and implement policies and procedures
- Oversee the Benefits Coordinator for all aspects of the FMLA, including educating managers and employees on rights and responsibilities, issuance of required paperwork, and responding to requests for leaves of absence
- Assist with annual audits
- Serve as a liaison to outside counsel for employment matters and litigation
- Foster positive relationships with Union leadership
- Develop and assist with campus-wide training efforts
- Ensure compliance with state and federal laws including the FLSA, ADA, OSHA, DOL, IRS, HLC, and ACA
- Other duties as assigned.
- Due to the collaborative nature of the team and the need for direct client/customer interaction, in-person attendance is an essential function of this position.
Minimum requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration or a related field and 5+ years of human resources experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills
- The successful candidate will show initiative, possess a strong attention to detail and be organized
- Advanced level of proficiency in Microsoft Suite including Word, Excel, AI tools, and PowerPoint and email applications
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment
Physical Requirements:
- Prolonged Sitting: The ability to remain in a stationary position for 75-90% of the work day.
- Manual Dexterity: The "fine motor skills" required to operate a computer, mouse, and phone, or to handle paper files and office equipment.
- Visual Acuity: The ability to see and read a computer screen for extended periods
- Sedentary/Light Lifting: The ability to lift up to 15 lbs.
- Reaching & Bending: Occasionally needing to reach above head level or bend down to access low filing cabinets or plug in computer cables.
- Noise Levels: The ability to work in an environment with moderate noise (phones ringing, printers, "open office" chatter).

Desired Qualifications:
- Master’s Degree in Human Resource Management or a related field
- Certification in Human Resources (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP or SHRM-SCP)
- Leadership experience in a unionized higher education institution
- Experience with payroll policies and procedures
- Prior experience working with HRIS systems; Paycor a plus
- Previous experience in higher education, preferably at a small, liberal arts College
- Knowledge of Adrian College policies and procedures
- Demonstrated commitment to working with diverse populations
