Position Summary
The Dock Supervisor oversees daily dock operations to ensure the efficient, safe, and accurate handling of inbound and outbound freight. This role is responsible for leading dock staff, maintaining adherence to company standards, coordinating with dispatch, and ensuring that freight flows smoothly through the facility.
Key Responsibilities
Dock Operations
- Supervise loading and unloading activities to ensure accuracy, safety, and timeliness.
- Monitor freight movement to maintain proper staging, consolidation, and routing.
- Inspect freight for damage, verify documentation, and ensure proper labeling.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organized dock environment.
- Coordinate with the Switcher on inbound and outbound Trailer moves
- Audit Freight Reclassifications made by Freight Handlers
- Coordinate and Dispatch Local Drivers for pickups
Team Leadership
- Train, coach, and mentor dock workers to ensure high performance and compliance.
- Schedule staff, assign tasks, and monitor productivity throughout shifts.
- Conduct performance feedback and assist with hiring decisions when needed.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and DOT/OSHA regulations.
- Conduct daily safety checks, forklift inspections, and dock equipment audits.
- Investigate incidents or near-misses and implement corrective actions.
Communication & Coordination
- Collaborate with dispatch and operations teams to meet shipping deadlines.
- Communicate staffing needs, freight challenges, and operational updates.
- Provide accurate documentation and reporting for freight movements and dock metrics.
Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience in transportation, LTL, warehousing, or logistics operations.
- Previous supervisory or lead experience preferred.
- Strong knowledge of dock operations, freight handling, and material handling equipment.
- Ability to operate forklifts, pallet jacks, and other dock machinery (certification preferred).
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work in a fast‑paced, physical environment and manage multiple priorities.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift 50+ lbs regularly.
- Extended periods of standing, walking, bending, and equipment operation.
- Ability to work in varying temperatures depending on seasonal conditions.
