Position Title: Maintenance Assistant
Supervisor: Head of Maintenance
Position Summary: Assist in maintaining the Susquehanna SPCA facilities, equipment, and grounds to ensure a safe, clean, and functional environment for animals, staff, volunteers, and visitors. Perform routine maintenance tasks, minor repairs, inspections, and facility upkeep while following all safety procedures and organizational policies.
Skills Required: General maintenance experience or interest in facility upkeep required. Knowledge of basic plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, and repair techniques preferred. Ability to safely use hand and power tools, ladders, and cleaning supplies. Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, communication skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team are necessary. High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid driver’s license preferred.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities as Maintenance Assistant:
- Respond to maintenance requests such as leaky faucets, broken locks, HVAC concerns, or minor electrical issues.
- Perform routine inspections of doors, windows, lighting, plumbing, and facility equipment to identify wear, damage, or potential hazards.
- Complete basic repairs including plumbing fixes, replacing damaged tiles, adjusting door hinges, and other minor maintenance tasks.
- Assist with facility upgrades including painting walls, mounting shelves, installing whiteboards, and similar projects.
- Organize and maintain tools, equipment, and supply rooms to ensure clean workspaces and easy access to materials.
- Support maintenance and janitorial staff with larger repairs, seasonal maintenance, and facility projects.
- Follow safety procedures when handling tools, ladders, cleaning chemicals, and maintenance equipment.
- Document completed maintenance tasks and report recurring or unresolved issues to supervisors.
- Assist in maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and functionality of all shelter buildings and grounds.
- Report facility concerns or safety hazards promptly to the Executive Director or Director of Operations.
Other Duties:
- Carry out other duties as assigned by Executive Director.
- Attend and participate in staff meetings.
- Participate in in-service training, projects and activities as assigned.
- Adhere to any new SQSPCA policies and procedures and the SQSPCA Employee Handbook.
- Report any on-the-job injuries to the Executive Director before the end of the work shift on the day the injury occurs.
- Practice safety in working around and with equipment, chemicals, tools, and utensils.
- Provide prompt response to resident and physical plant emergencies.
- Establish and maintain constructive working relationships with co-workers, residents, volunteers, and visitors.
- Maintain confidentiality of verbal and written information pertaining to SQSPCA operations and personnel.
- Treat staff and shelter visitors with fairness and respect.
- Promote the SQSPCA in a positive way.
- Promote teamwork.
- Follow and communicate detailed instructions, asking questions if not sure about something.
- Reporting to work under the influence of mood-altering or illegal drugs or alcohol and use of same while on job premises is strictly prohibited.
Other Requirements:
- Lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling up to 50 lbs. using proper body mechanics and/or available equipment.
- Bending, squatting or reaching in order to perform animal care tasks.
- Occasional standing on ladder or step stool to clean in order to treat animals in cage banks.
- Repetitive arm/hand/wrist movements and arm strength to perform animal treatments.
- Able to safely drive in inclement weather.
- Safe and proper operation of animal care and office equipment.
- A clean driver’s license is required for this position.
- Occasional flexibility in hours worked.
- Other duties as assigned.
Pay: From $16.50 per hour
