USD 204 1:1 School-based Registered Nurse (RN)
Purpose Statement
The purpose of a 1:1 School-based Registered Nurse is done is to oversee the individual health needs of a particular student requiring health support during school hours; implementing health care plans directed by physicians; and ensuring district health care practices comply with the laws relating to student health issues.
Essential Functions
● Deliver personalized nursing care to a student requiring constant health support during school hours
● Manage specialized medical needs including tube feeding, wound care, and the use of suction equipment, catheterization, and other treatments as needed.
● Monitor and respond to seizure activity promptly and effectively
● Assist with safe transfers and mobility to ensure student comfort and safety
● Collaborate with school staff and healthcare providers to maintain consistent care protocols
● Implement and follow the student’s individualized healthcare plan (IHP), emergency care plan (ECP), and/or physician orders
● Respond promptly and appropriately to medical emergencies
● Assist the student with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed (e.g., feeding, toileting, mobility)
● Communicate regularly with parents/guardians, school staff, and healthcare providers regarding the student’s condition and needs
● Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, and related service providers to support the student’s educational access
● Ensure compliance with all district policies, state regulations, and healthcare standards
● Maintain appropriate medical supplies and equipment for the student
● Maintains complete and accurate documentation of all nursing care and activities within the scope of school nursing functions for the purpose of providing information required by legal requirements and professional standards.
● Maintains contact with parents/guardians for the purpose of advising them of changes in student health and/or recommending further medical and/or emotional intervention
Other Functions
● Performs other related duties as assigned for ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications, Physical Requirements, Work Environment and Terms of Employment
Minimum Qualifications
● Current, valid Registered Nurse (RN) (Preferred) or Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license (per state requirements)
● Current CPR and First Aid certification
● Experience in pediatric, school, or special needs nursing preferred
● Knowledge of chronic health conditions, medical equipment, and emergency procedures
● Ability to work independently and respond effectively in urgent situations
● Strong communication and interpersonal skills
● Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism at all times
Physical Requirements
● Ability to lift and assist student as needed
● Ability to stand, walk, and remain attentive for extended periods
● Ability to perform medical procedures requiring manual dexterity
Work Environment
● Elementary school setting, including classroom, playground, and school transportation as needed
● May involve exposure to bodily fluids and communicable illnesses
Terms of Employment
● School-year position following the district calendar
● Hours aligned with the assigned student’s schedule
● Salary commensurate with experience and benefits per district policy and negotiated agreements
Reports to: Principal and District Health Services Coordinator
Experience: Job related experience with increasing levels of responsibility is desired.
