Lead Teacher – Special Education (Certified)
Position Overview
We are seeking a passionate and experienced Certified Lead Teacher to serve as lead instructor for a classroom team dedicated to students with disabilities. The ideal candidate will promote a healthy, positive, safe, and structured school environment while establishing strong communication channels with students, families, teaching staff, and support teams to drive meaningful outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Adapt and modify lesson plans from the school curriculum to support student progression
- Collect and document ongoing data tracking progress toward IEP goals, Common Core Standards, and PARCC requirements
- Prepare, write, and implement student IEPs using OSSE's electronic system (SEDS)
- Collaborate regularly with the Principal and classroom team on student goals, needs, and lesson modifications
- Support staff and administration in understanding special education practices; arrange and conduct in-service trainings as needed
- Support students in both traditional and functional academics, including community-based transition activities such as Job Shadowing and Summer Youth Employment
- Transport students to approved field trips, Special Olympics, and other educational events using an agency vehicle; conduct approved home visits and deliveries
- Assist in developing and implementing classroom and school-wide strategies for positive student outcomes
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field required; Master's degree in Special Education preferred
- Must hold Special Education certification (out-of-state certification accepted) and have passed PRAXIS I & II or comparable out-of-state exams
- Applicants with an active full credential from another U.S. state or territory may qualify for DC credential reciprocity, which must be obtained within the school year of hire
- Minimum of 1 semester of student teaching or 1 year of lead classroom teaching experience
- Experience in behavior management a plus
- Strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills
Requirements
- Must pass all required background checks and screenings
- Valid driver's license required; must be able to safely operate an agency vehicle
- Ability to meet physical demands of a classroom environment (standing, bending, lifting, active supervision)
