SUMMARY:
The elementary teacher is responsible for the instruction of students assigned to his/her classroom and general supervision of all students. The teacher’s role is to create a flexible elementary grade program and class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; to establish effective rapport with students; to motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for elementary education, in accordance with each student’s ability; and to establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

This is an itinerant position serving both Harrington and Walters Elementary.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of a Bachelor's degree or higher

Valid Michigan elementary teaching certificate
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

Teach skills in music appreciation, harmony and explorations in music and/or to students, utilizing courses of study and grade level expectations adopted by the Board of Education

Instruct students in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and the administrative regulations and procedures of the school district

Plan a balanced music program and organize daily class time so that preparation, rehearsal and instruction can be accomplished within the allotted time

Provide individual and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each student

Utilize repertoire of various types of music literature, including traditional and contemporary, that are appropriate for the ages and skill levels of students

Control the storage and use of school-owned property

Establish and maintain standards of student behavior to provide an orderly, productive environment during practice, group rehearsals and musical performances

Evaluate each student’s musical growth and performance and report progress on appropriate forms
-
Plan, rehearse and direct students in musical performance programs

Assist in the selection and requisitioning of books, musical instruments and instructional aids and maintain required inventory records

Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress and to interpret the school program

Maintain professional competence through in-service education provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities

Demonstrate an understanding of the district's mission, vision and strategic priorities and actively works to advance them through daily practice and professional conduct

Contribute to the culture and climate of the district by modeling its core values, fostering a collaborative and inclusive environment and serving as a committed representative of the district's identity and purpose in all interactions with students, families, staff and the broader community

Read and be familiar with the School Student Handbook and Policy Manual of Marshall Public Schools. Strict compliance with all rules, regulations and policies is required.
