Role Overview
BEPC is actively seeking a Scientist I to join our customer's team in South San Francisco, California. This laboratory-based role supports the development, characterization, and qualification of advanced human lung complex in vitro models (CIVMs) used in translational safety and drug development.
The ideal candidate will have experience in cell biology, bioengineering, toxicology, or a related discipline with expertise in lung organoids, air-liquid interface (ALI) cultures, microphysiological systems, and advanced molecular and imaging techniques. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to innovative research supporting the development of safer and more effective therapies.
Key Responsibilities: Research & Model Development
- Develop, qualify, and implement advanced human lung complex in vitro models, including:
- Airway organoids
- Alveolar organoids
- Air-Liquid Interface (ALI) cultures
- Lung-on-a-chip and microphysiological systems
- Support disease modeling and translational safety research through innovative in vitro platforms.
- Optimize protocols and troubleshoot complex in vitro systems.
Experimental Design & Execution
- Design and perform experiments to characterize lung models using techniques including:
- Cell viability and cytotoxicity assays
- Barrier integrity and permeability testing
- Transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) assays
- Immunofluorescence
- Confocal microscopy
- High-content imaging and screening
- Live-cell and time-lapse imaging
- qRT-PCR
- RNA sequencing (RNA-seq)
- Proteomics
- Analyze experimental data and interpret complex biological results.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Partner with multidisciplinary teams supporting translational medicine, development sciences, and research initiatives.
- Communicate scientific findings through presentations, reports, and technical discussions.
- Contribute to internal and external scientific publications when appropriate.
Documentation & Compliance
- Maintain accurate electronic laboratory records in accordance with departmental Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Prepare study reports, technical documentation, and scientific summaries.
- Ensure compliance with laboratory quality standards and documentation requirements.
Required Qualifications
- PhD in Bioengineering, Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Toxicology, or a related scientific discipline.
- 3–5 years of postdoctoral or industry experience conducting hypothesis-driven research.
- Experience culturing multiple lung cell types, including primary cells and established cell lines.
- Hands-on experience developing and applying:
- Lung organoids
- Airway or alveolar organoids
- Co-culture systems
- Microphysiological or microfluidic platforms
- Experience with molecular and cellular characterization techniques, including:
- qRT-PCR
- RNA-seq
- Proteomics
- Immunofluorescence
- Confocal microscopy
- High-content imaging
- Live-cell imaging
- Strong experimental design, troubleshooting, and method development skills.
- Excellent analytical, communication, and collaboration skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in lung biology and immunology.
- Proficiency with MATLAB and/or Python for image analysis, algorithm development, and large-scale data analysis.
- Experience supporting translational research or drug discovery programs.
