Applicants for SMTD Driver positions must have a high school diploma or GED, be at least 25 years of age, have a clean driving record, must be able to pass a DOT physical, drug and alcohol test, criminal background check, and must be able to operate any vehicle in the fixed-route fleet. Drivers must be able to assist disabled passengers in wheelchairs to board and disembark from the vehicles and must be able to secure the wheelchairs in the vehicles.
A CDL is not required to be hired, but trainees must be able to obtain a training permit before the end of the first week of training and must be able to obtain the full CDL with air brake and passenger endorsements to continue employment. The SMTD assists with preparation for the driving test prior to completion of training.
Drivers must have a pleasant disposition and be able to interact with passengers in a courteous manner.
