WORK HOURS/DAYS: Monday-Friday, 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM, callouts possible
CLASSIFICATION: Full-Time, Non-exempt
STARTING WAGE: DOEQ $20-25hr. TOS

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: The Fleet Mechanic monitors and directs the day-to-day activities and operations of fleet maintenance; coordinates and provides maintenance and repair to city department vehicles and machinery. Oversees and performs skilled tasks in the servicing, repair and maintenance of a variety of city equipment and vehicles; oversees the inventory and procurement of all applicable parts, supplies, tools, fuels and equipment needed with supervisor assistance; prepares maintenance reports and machinery/part documentation.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Plan and lead in the inspection, repair, diagnosis, and location of all mechanical difficulties on city automobiles, trucks, and a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered maintenance and construction equipment for scheduled and unscheduled mechanical repairs and maintenance activities
2. Procurement of applicable parts and equipment for repair and maintenance; maintain inventory of supplies and equipment
3. Review invoices for accuracy, ensure proper levels of inventory are achieved
4. Inspect and test equipment repairs to monitor proper functioning
5. Oversee and lead in performing tune-ups on vehicles and equipment including but not limited to oil changes, tire rotations, etc.
6. Perform preventative maintenance on city vehicles and equipment; inspect and prepare vehicles to comply with DOT requirements
7. Performs snow and ice control procedures including plowing, sanding, loading trucks, hauling snow, and shoveling city sidewalks
8. Respond to road calls and make repairs in the field
9. Perform welding, fabrication and tooling in repairs of shop equipment, city facilities, light and heavy equipment
10. Develop and maintain records and reports of maintenance services provided
11. Assist in developing department budgets for mechanical expenses and vehicle/equipment allocation and replacement
12. Maintains files and records for fleet services; reviews documents for accuracy, research discrepancies, update records and information as appropriate
13. Performs related duties as required
PERIPHERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Operate assigned equipment in a safe and efficient manner and according to established policies and procedures
2. Assist other departments with skilled labor projects as directed by supervisor

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The employee can be exposed to wet and dry conditions. The noise level in the work environment can be loud when performing certain responsibilities of the position. Repair and mechanical repair shop environment with exposure to fumes, odors, gasoline, solvents, cleaners, oils, and other related liquids Employee must be able to work in a team environment or independently, always alert and aware of surroundings at all times
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
1. 18 years of age or older
2. Valid driver’s license,
3. Class B CDL, or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire
4. Tanker endorsement, or ability to obtain within 18 months of hire
5. High School Diploma or equivalent
6. Three (3) years of automotive/mechanical repair experience

3. Knowledge of basic techniques and methods used in construction, repair and general maintenance

6. Knowledge of methods and techniques required in diagnosing, repair, and maintenance of equipment/vehicles
7. Understanding of tools and fluids used in mechanical repair and maintenance of applicable equipment and vehicles
8. Knowledge of methods and techniques for lubricating automobile equipment parts
9. Ability to assist in budget development and administration procedures
10. Understanding of municipal purchasing procedures and processes
11. Demonstrate an awareness and appreciation of the cultural diversity of the community
