JOB SUMMARY:
Under the supervision of the Branch Director and/or designated administrator, the Van Driver is responsible for providing safe, reliable, and timely transportation for BGCCV members from school and to BGCCV Clubs or other approved locations. The Van Driver plays a vital role in ensuring students arrive at designated locations in a safe, welcoming, and supportive environment.
The Van Driver demonstrates patience, professionalism, and sound judgment while maintaining the highest standards of student safety. Safety is the #1 priority in every aspect of this position.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Safely transport students to & from school, community-based instruction, field trips, and other approved destinations according to established routes and schedules.
- Maintain a safe, calm, and positive environment while members are riding in the BGCCV van by modeling appropriate behavior and providing respectful support.
- Provide safe supervision and assistance to members during loading, unloading, and transportation, while remaining attentive to individual member needs and accommodations.
- Conduct required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, documenting findings and reporting maintenance concerns or safety hazards promptly.
- Maintain assigned vehicle in a clean, organized, and safe operating condition.
- Follow all California Department of Motor Vehicles regulations, BGCCV transportation policies, and organizational safety procedures.
- Maintain compliance with all member confidentiality requirements and organizational policies.
- Communicate professionally with school staff, parents/guardians, and supervisors regarding memebr transportation needs, route changes, attendance concerns, delays, and incidents.
- Accurately complete transportation logs, attendance logs, inspection reports, mileage records, accident reports, and other required documentation.
- Respond appropriately to emergencies by following established safety procedures and protocols.
- Participate in required safety meetings, trainings, and professional development activities.
- Exercise sound judgment while operating the vehicle under varying traffic and weather conditions.
- Maintain punctuality and reliability to ensure consistent transportation services for members and families.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assist with members loading and unloading using approved safety procedures and equipment when necessary.
- Report member behavioral concerns, medical concerns, accidents, injuries, or unusual incidents immediately to the appropriate supervisor.
- Maintain familiarity with member emergency information and transportation plans.
- Participate in annual safety training, emergency evacuation drills, and transportation compliance requirements.
- Perform other duties and transportation-related assignments as requested by the Branch Director or assigned administrator.
- Serve as a California mandated reporter and comply with all child abuse reporting requirements.
RELATIONSHIPS:
Internal:
Maintains regular communication with Branch Director, school personnel, instructional assistants, administrators, transportation staff, and supervisors to ensure member safety and coordinate transportation services.
Works collaboratively with school personnel to support member success and respond to transportation-related concerns.
External:
Maintains professional and respectful communication with parents, guardians, community members, law enforcement, emergency personnel, and outside agencies regarding transportation matters when appropriate.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:
- Current California Driver's License with a clean driving record required.
- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- Previous experience transporting students is preferred.
- Knowledge of safe driving practices and defensive driving techniques.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
- Ability to remain calm, patient, and professional in fast-paced or emergency situations.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment.
- Knowledge of applicable transportation safety regulations and school policies.
- Ability to complete required reports and maintain accurate records.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Use of hands and upper extremities to type and operate computers.
- Manual dexterity to repair equipment.
- Ability to lift 25-50 pounds.
- Ability to sit, stand and walk to supervise members.
- Noise level in work environment varies from very quiet to very noisy based on attendance.
- Transportation BGCCV ratio is 1 adult to 9 members.
COMPLIANCE REQUIREMENTS:
- Current California Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.
- Must be at least 21years of age.
- Successful completion of all required background clearances and fingerprinting.
- Must meet all organizational and state transportation requirements.
- Current CPR and First Aid Certification (or ability to obtain upon hire, if required).
- California Mandated Reporter Training required.
