Experienced Veterinary Technician or Veterinary Assistant – Four-Day Workweek

Full-time schedule: Four 10-hour shifts scheduled Monday–Friday | No weekends or holidays
Full-time preferred; qualified part-time candidates will also be considered

West Ballantyne Animal Hospital is a privately owned, two-doctor small animal practice in the Ballantyne area of South Charlotte. We provide high-quality, relationship-based veterinary care and take pride in knowing our clients and their pets personally.
We are seeking an experienced Veterinary Assistant or Registered Veterinary Technician who is confident working with patients, communicates comfortably with clients, and contributes actively to an efficient veterinary team.
This is a client-facing position with a strong focus on appointments, patient care, preventive medicine, and client education. Clinical responsibilities are assigned according to each employee’s training and demonstrated competency and may include laboratory procedures, radiology, dentistry, surgery support, venipuncture, IV catheter placement, and anesthesia monitoring.

Compensation
The pay range for this position is $20–$29 per hour, based on relevant veterinary experience, credentials, technical competency, client-service ability, and overall skill level.

Responsibilities
- Assist veterinarians during examinations, treatments, and outpatient appointments
- Obtain patient histories and vital signs and maintain accurate medical records
- Communicate clearly and professionally with clients
- Educate pet owners about vaccines, parasite prevention, medications, nutrition, wellness care, and follow-up recommendations
- Safely and compassionately handle and restrain dogs and cats using low-stress techniques
- Collect and process laboratory samples and assist with venipuncture, IV catheter placement, radiology, and other diagnostics based on demonstrated competency
- Prepare and administer medications, vaccines, and treatments as directed by a veterinarian
- Assist with dentistry, surgery, anesthesia, and patient recovery based on experience and training
- Keep exam rooms, treatment areas, equipment, and supplies clean, organized, and ready for use
- Communicate appointment progress and patient needs effectively with doctors and other team members
- Take initiative while recognizing when assistance or additional direction is needed
- Contribute to a professional, supportive, and efficient hospital environment
Qualifications
- At least one year of recent small-animal veterinary hospital experience required for noncredentialed applicants; two or more years strongly preferred
- North Carolina Registered Veterinary Technicians, credential-eligible candidates, and credentialed candidates with less experience are encouraged to apply
- Strong patient-handling and restraint skills
- Comfortable obtaining patient histories and communicating directly with clients
- Experience with venipuncture, laboratory procedures, radiology, IV catheters, anesthesia, or surgery preferred
- Familiarity with preventive-care recommendations and common veterinary medications
- Dependable, organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities
- Willing to ask questions, accept feedback, and build upon previous training
- Able to work independently while remaining aware of the needs of the veterinary team
- Professional, friendly, and compassionate with clients, patients, and coworkers
- Regular and reliable attendance
Physical Requirements
This position involves extended periods of standing and walking, frequent bending and kneeling, animal restraint, and lifting patients or supplies. Team assistance and appropriate lifting techniques are expected for heavier patients.
