Role Summary
We are looking for a skilled Outside Machinist Instructor to assist a top-tier shipbuilding facility. In this capacity, you will guide the development of personnel in manual machining techniques, component installation, and the maintenance of mechanical systems found on ships.
This position is perfect for a seasoned lead, foreman, or senior machinist who possesses a deep mechanical background and a genuine desire to mentor the next generation of professionals.
Core Duties-
Provide comprehensive classroom and practical instruction regarding shipboard mechanical tasks and outside machining.

Instruct staff on manual machining processes including boring, drilling, milling, and lathe operations.

Teach the installation, alignment, and upkeep of various shipboard mechanical components.

Demonstrate the use of precision measuring instruments like dial indicators, calipers, and micrometers to ensure strict tolerances.

Help improve project accuracy by teaching teams how to effectively interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and work packages.

Create and update instructional aids, lesson plans, and training materials.

Promote a culture of safety and excellence by ensuring all work meets shipyard quality standards and procedures.

Assess the progress of trainees through practical demonstrations and formal evaluations.

Keep precise documentation of trainee qualifications and training history.

Collaborate with production management to pinpoint specific skill gaps and training requirements.

Support operational efficiency by providing direct, on-the-floor coaching to reinforce industry best practices.
Essential Qualifications-
High School Diploma or GED.

At least six years of professional experience in manual or outside machining, or a combination of a technical degree/apprenticeship and relevant field work.

Extensive background in manual machining operations such as drilling, milling, and lathe work.

Proficiency in utilizing precision measurement tools and executing alignment procedures.

Expertise in troubleshooting and installing mechanical systems.

Proven ability to analyze and apply technical drawings and blueprints.

Strong interpersonal skills with the capability to mentor and instruct others.

Ability to thrive in a hands-on, industrial shipyard setting.
Preferred Qualifications-
Background in a lead, foreman, instructor, or trainer capacity.

Experience within heavy industrial, naval, or shipbuilding sectors.

Knowledge of propulsion systems, turbines, valves, pumps, or shaft alignment.

Familiarity with quality systems such as NAVSEA standards.

Experience in the creation or delivery of structured training curricula.
