We are seeking a compassionate, energetic, and dependable individual to join our team as a Caregiver / Life Skills Coach supporting a young adult woman with autism.
This is an active, hands-on role for someone who genuinely enjoys helping others grow, explore their community, develop life skills, and live a meaningful life.
The ideal candidate is patient, creative, and able to work independently while encouraging participation in community activities, social opportunities, faith-based events, and daily life skill development.
This role takes place primarily in the client's home and out in the community,supporting daily living skills and community participation.
This position is best suited for someone looking to build a long-term, consistent relationship and become an important part of the client's support network.
Schedule: Tuesday & Thursday 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM - Occasional Saturday or evening shifts
Responsibilities:
- Accompany the client to scheduled activities, appointments, and community outings, actively participating when appropriate.
- Provide safe and reliable transportation to activities, appointments, and community-based opportunities using own vehicle.
- Encourage participation in meaningful activities, personal interests, and community experiences that align with the client's strengths, preferences, and goals.
- Teach, model, and support the development of daily living skills, including cooking and meal preparation, laundry, household organization, cleaning, personal hygiene, and self-care routines.
- Recognize when communication support is needed and assist the client in expressing needs, preferences, and choices while encouraging self-advocacy and independence across home, community, and social settings.
- Support the development of community safety skills, including awareness of surroundings, personal boundaries, decision-making, and safe interactions with unfamiliar people and animals.
- Exercise sound judgment in balancing independence and support, recognizing when to encourage skill development and when direct assistance is needed to ensure success, reduce frustration, or maintain safety, while staying actively engaged, offering encouragement, and creating positive experiences that respect the client's personality and need for personal space.
- Assist the client in making healthy lifestyle choices, maintaining routines, and reducing excessive screen time.
- Work collaboratively with family members and the support team, using shared calendars, scheduling tools, reminders, and visual supports to promote consistency, organization, independence, and time-management skills.
Qualifications:
- Naturally patient, emotionally mature, dependable, and flexible
- Able to stay calm and supportive during frustration, resistance, or unexpected challenges, without taking behaviors personally
- Observant and intuitive; knows when to step in, step back, or offer additional support
- Skilled at balancing encouragement and independence, adjusting communication and energy to the client's needs in the moment
- Creative and engaged, willing to actively participate in activities rather than just supervise
- Comfortable teaching and modeling daily living skills, community participation, and healthy habits
- Strong communicator who collaborates well with family and the support team, using calendars, schedules, and visual supports
- Open-minded and teachable, committed to learning the client's unique communication style, preferences, strengths, interests, and support needs
- Respects the client's individuality, choices, and dignity while remaining reliable, punctual, and consistent
Requirements:
- At least 18 years old
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Must be able to transport client in own vehicle, registered, insured, reliable, and well-maintained
- Comfortable passing a background check
- Clean California driving record
- 2–5 years experience providing care or support to individuals with developmental disabilities
Preferred:
- Knowledge of ABA (Applied Behavior Analysis)
- Basic ASL (American Sign Language)
