Are you a skilled sign language interpreter looking to make a direct, meaningful impact on a student's educational journey? We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Educational Sign Language Interpreter to provide full-time support for an elementary student. In this role, you will bridge the communication gap, interpreting within both regular and special education environments while collaborating closely with teachers to support the student's unique learning needs.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Direct Interpreting: Provide clear American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation of teacher instructions and classroom communication for the student, both individually and in group settings.
- Instructional Support: Assist the classroom teacher in developing instructional plans and organizing program materials for daily activities.
- Progress Monitoring: Informally evaluate the student's comprehension of the material, assist with re-instruction when necessary, and provide feedback to the teacher regarding student understanding.
- Collaboration & Communication: Share relevant progress and insights with CESA staff, district personnel, and parents to ensure a cohesive support system.
- Documentation & Training: Complete required record-keeping and reporting, and actively participate in staff meetings and training sessions.
Secondary Responsibilities:
- Collaborate with the Coordinator of Hearing Services on long-range planning, meetings, and professional development.
- Apply in-depth knowledge of special education principles, school building protocols, and classroom management practices.
- Work independently with minimal supervision to handle complex special education situations and offer sound recommendations.
- Follow all procedures related to external contracts and perform other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements & Qualifications:
Licensure & Certification
- Must hold, or be eligible for, the appropriate Educational Interpreter license through the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI).
- Ability to satisfy additional degree, licensure, or training requirements as determined by the Agency.

Physical & Logistical Requirements
- Ability to meet the physical demands of an elementary classroom setting, including moving between rooms, standing, walking, bending, kneeling, stooping, and sitting on the floor as needed.
- Ability to respond quickly and physically to student needs, including emergency situations.
- Ability to lift and carry materials and equipment up to 35 pounds.
- A valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record and access to private transportation for travel to assigned work locations (if applicable).
