POSITION SUMMARY:
Provides sports and physical activities instruction to participants of different ages and ensure that they thrive and are successful within the program. In addition, this position supports the work of the Berwick Area YMCA, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening our community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
1. Develops and implements new sports programs and activities monitoring participants and gymnasium use for safety.
2. Prepares and executes lesson plans for recreational programs.
3. Creates and maintains positive relationships with participants and parents, aiming to encourage them in a positive attitude.
4. Maintain facility cleanliness, includes gymnasium, closets and equipment inventories. Responsible for the care and maintenance of supplies and equipment in the department. Maintains a proactive role in the maintenance, repair and replacement of departmental facilities and equipment.

Recruits, trains and supervises volunteers to supplement programs.
6. Attends meetings with the Wellness Director and peer instructors pertinent to his or her position.
7. Other duties as assigned by supervisor.
QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and or ability required.
- Ability to work with children and participants of all ages.
- Able to communicate effectively with participants, parents, and other instructors.
- Be a team player, must work well with others.
- Show initiative as well as leadership skills.
- Ability to think creatively and with an open mind.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check.
- Ability to lead and participate in vigorous physical activities including running, exercising, throwing, crawling, balancing, talking, grasping and lifting equipment with 100lbs of force occasionally and 50 lbs of force frequently
EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. 1+ year experience as a participant in organized sports.
3. 1+ year experience working with children in a recreation and/or instructional setting preferred.

WORK SCHEDULE:
Work schedule will vary depending on needs of program as agreed upon with the Wellness Director. Work hours will primarily be during the late afternoon/early evening and weekends.
