Position Description:
The Design Group is the central resource within Dominion Engineering, Inc., an Allied Power company, that performs equipment, tooling, and product design. Engineers within the Design Group work within and collaborate to improve established design, drafting and release processes.
The CAD Designer supports the Design Group by producing high-quality 3D CAD models and fabrication drawings based on direction from engineers and technical leads. CAD Designers participate in iterative design sessions, translating rough sketches and verbal direction into release-ready models and drawings, and refining work through rapid check-in cycles until the engineer of record is satisfied with the design representation.
CAD Designers work as production contributors within project-specific team structures and do not serve as design authority on assigned work.
This position requires strict adherence to nuclear industry principles, including but not limited to:
· Commitment to personal, industrial, and nuclear safety
· Verbatim compliance with written work instructions and procedures
· Fitness for Duty – Drug and Alcohol-Free workplace
· Use of Human Performance Tools
Applicants who cannot demonstrate expert-level SolidWorks proficiency and independent GD&T application will not be considered.
Reports to: Technical Director of Engineering Design, Products and Technology Division
Essential Functions:
Reasonable accommodation may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
1. Produce 3D CAD models and 2D fabrication drawings from rough sketches, verbal direction, and redlines provided by engineers and technical leads.
2. Participate in iterative design sessions, incorporating feedback and revisions efficiently through multiple check-in cycles until the engineer of record approves the design representation.
3. Apply appropriate GD&T per ASME Y14.5 to fabrication drawings, using judgment developed through direct discussion with the responsible engineer regarding functional requirements and inspection priorities.
4. Create and maintain engineering documentation, including but not limited to 3D models, 2D fabrication drawings, and bills of materials.
5. Ensure drawings are complete, clear, and consistent with design intent before release, serving as Preparer signatory on released drawing packages.
6. Collaborate cross-functionally with design engineers, Project Coordinators, and the Engineering Design Director to ensure assigned drafting work is completed from concept to release.
7. Demonstrate enthusiasm for sharing knowledge within the Design Group, encouraging consistency and high quality of work product.
Additional Functions:
Subject to company and project needs, the CAD Designer may be called on to perform other functions suited to his/her expertise, including but not limited to:
1. Acting as an Individual Contributor on non-drafting tasks related to his/her work (e.g., generating figures, producing as-built documentation, supporting procedure development).
2. Reporting and disposition of deviations and corrective actions related to assigned drawing packages.
3. Traveling to support field implementation of a project.
4. Supporting internal business initiatives.
Required Competencies:
1. Expert-level SolidWorks proficiency, including:
a. 3D part and assembly modeling (CSWP – Mechanical Design or equivalent demonstrated proficiency).
b. 2D drafting and fabrication drawing preparation to release standard.
c. Assembly management, configurations, and drawing templates.
2. Formal training and demonstrated proficiency in ASME Y14.5 GD&T, including correct application of datum structures, geometric controls, and tolerance specification on fabrication drawings. Candidates should be able to independently specify and defend GD&T callouts on a fabrication drawing without engineering guidance on symbol selection.
3. Ability to interpret and translate rough sketches, verbal direction, and marked-up drawings into complete, accurate 3D models and 2D drawings.
4. Ability to manage multiple concurrent drafting assignments and respond to rapid iterative revision cycles while maintaining drawing quality.
5. Strong attention to detail and drawing completeness, including view selection, annotation clarity, and BOM accuracy.
6. Clear verbal and written communication, particularly in collaborative design sessions with engineers and technical leads.
Preferred Competencies:
1. Comprehensive understanding of nuclear work environment and the unique design challenges/requirements thereof.
2. Experience with SolidWorks PDM or equivalent document and revision control systems.
3. Hands-on familiarity with manufacturing processes and DFM considerations, including 2D CNC (waterjet/laser cutting), 3D CNC (multi-axis milling and lathe turning), sheet metal, and weldments.
4. Exposure to additive manufacturing and DfAM, including FDM, SLS, and MJF processes.
5. Familiarity with dimensional inspection concepts, including interpretation of CMM reports and 3D scan data as inputs to drawing revision.
