Earthwork Operator / Laborer

**Location:** Various Job Sites – Northern California
Position Summary
The Earthwork Operator / Laborer is a versatile field position responsible for both skilled equipment operation and manual labor to support excavation, grading, and underground utility installation. This role supports the earthwork crew in preparing subgrade, placing and compacting aggregate base (AB), and installing storm drain systems including pipe, manholes, and drain inlets. Operators must be proficient with equipment such as a skid steer, mini excavator (Cat 304), and occasionally operate compactors such as padfoot or double steel drum rollers. They are also expected to perform hand labor, read grade stakes, and follow foreman instructions.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate skid steer and mini excavator (Cat 304) safely and efficiently
- Occasionally operate padfoot or double steel drum roller for compaction
- Assist with excavation, subgrade grading, and AB placement
- Perform manual labor including digging, shoveling, and compacting by hand
- Trench, bed, and install storm drain pipe per plans and grade
- Install precast and cast-in-place manholes and drain inlets
- Backfill and compact around underground utilities and structures
- Check grade using laser level
- Assist with layout and setting forms as needed
- Maintain clean and safe work area on job sites
- Support the crew and foreman in all phases of grading and utility installation
- Submit accurate daily timecards and equipment hours
Required Qualifications
- Minimum 1–2 years of experience in civil construction or earthwork
- Ability to operate skid steer and mini excavator (Cat 304) with care and precision
- Understanding of excavation, backfill, grading, and compaction techniques
- Physically fit and able to perform manual labor throughout the day
- Ability to check grade using laser level or story pole
- Valid California driver’s license and reliable transportation
- Familiarity with trench safety and working around utilities
- Strong communication skills and team-oriented attitude
- Punctual, reliable, and able to take direction from crew leads
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience installing storm drain systems including pipe, manholes, and inlets
- Current OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification
- Class A or B license a plus
- Experience reading grade stakes and site plans
