About the Role
The Mental Health Technician works as part of a team to support youth in a residential behavioral health environment. This position helps maintain safety, structure, and consistency throughout the day while encouraging positive choices, accountability, and personal growth.
This is hands-on work. The right person for this role is patient, observant, and able to build appropriate relationships while maintaining clear boundaries.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and support youth during daily routines, activities, meals, recreation, and transitions
- Help maintain a safe, clean, and structured environment
- Encourage positive behavior, accountability, and healthy coping skills
- Follow the daily schedule and assist youth with program expectations
- Monitor youth behavior and report concerns to supervisors or clinical staff
- Support treatment goals by reinforcing skills taught through the program
- Use approved verbal de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques when needed
- Document observations, incidents, and required information accurately and on time
- Work closely with supervisors, clinical staff, education staff, and other team members
- Participate in required trainings, meetings, and ongoing professional development
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required
- Must be at least 21 years old, or meet state/program requirements
- Experience in behavioral health, residential care, youth services, corrections, education, security, direct support, or similar work preferred
- Must be dependable, professional, and able to work as part of a team
- Must be able to remain calm and make sound decisions in challenging situations
- Must be able to build positive relationships with youth while maintaining appropriate boundaries
- Must be able to complete required background checks, drug screening, and training requirements
Physical Demands
- Must be in good physical health and emotionally stable
- Able to actively engage with youth, participate in physical interventions, and transport youth or staff as needed
- Must be free of communicable diseases as defined by the state
- Must pass evaluation of physical techniques and certification exams
