Job Requirements of Shipfitter
- Fabricate and layout metal for building and repairing ships
- Building, maintaining, and repairing different types of vessels
- Inspect work for defects before turning the job over to welders. Correct fit ups as required.
- Write comprehensive found reports (CFR).
- Read and interpret structural drawings (including weld symbols), sketches, specifications, and NavSea standard items and Navy damage control diagrams.
Qualifications and Experience of Shipfitter
- Must have the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, fractions and decimals using US customary measurements.
- Must have experience using oxy-acetylene torches for cutting and washing.
- Must have experience in welding using SMAW (S-11A) (fillet), FCAW (S-1) (fillet), and GMAW (S-25) (fillet).
Summary
As a Shipyard Ship Fitter, you will be integral to the assembly and maintenance of marine vessels, reporting directly to the lead shipwright. This role requires expertise in MIG welding and mechanical knowledge, utilizing hand and power tools to ensure precision in fabrication and repairs. Your core skills in vehicle maintenance and assembly will be essential, while premium skills in schematics and electrical experience will enhance your contributions. With a focus on safety and quality, you will help uphold the organization’s standards in shipbuilding and repair, ensuring vessels meet operational requirements.
