A-LEAF Specialized Consulting is seeking an experienced Civil Engineer to support the construction of a utility-scale solar and Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) project. This is an onsite position requiring hands-on field experience with civil construction activities associated with renewable energy projects.
The Civil Engineer will provide technical oversight, support field execution, coordinate with contractors and project stakeholders, and help ensure civil work is completed safely, correctly, and in accordance with project drawings, specifications, schedules, and quality requirements.
Position Type: Full-Time, Onsite
Schedule: Six weeks onsite followed by one week off
Rotation Details: The one-week rotation break is optional and unpaid if taken
Hours: Minimum of 40 hours per week while onsite
Pay Range: $50+ per hour, based on experience
Location: Utility-Scale Solar and BESS Project Site
Key Responsibilities
- Provide onsite civil engineering support for utility-scale solar and BESS construction activities.
- Review civil drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, surveys, and construction documents.
- Monitor grading, excavation, drainage, stormwater controls, access roads, laydown yards, equipment pads, foundations, and underground utility work.
- Support construction of inverter pads, transformer foundations, BESS equipment pads, substation areas, and associated civil infrastructure.
- Verify civil work is completed in accordance with approved drawings, project specifications, permits, and applicable codes.
- Coordinate with construction management, contractors, inspectors, surveyors, testing agencies, and engineering teams.
- Identify field conflicts, constructability concerns, design discrepancies, and potential schedule impacts.
- Assist with RFIs, submittals, field change documentation, redlines, and as-built records.
- Monitor contractor performance, work quality, production, and compliance with project requirements.
- Support inspections and quality-control activities related to earthwork, compaction, concrete, drainage, roads, and equipment foundations.
- Review testing results, including soil compaction, concrete testing, and other civil quality documentation.
- Participate in daily coordination meetings, site walks, safety meetings, and construction planning activities.
- Track civil progress and provide clear updates to project leadership.
- Support punch-list development, final inspections, turnover documentation, and project closeout.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Previous civil engineering or field engineering experience on utility-scale solar and BESS projects.
- Strong understanding of grading, drainage, earthwork, roads, foundations, concrete, underground utilities, and stormwater management.
- Ability to read and interpret civil drawings, specifications, surveys, and geotechnical reports.
- Experience coordinating with contractors, construction managers, engineers, inspectors, and project owners.
- Familiarity with civil QA/QC documentation, testing requirements, RFIs, submittals, and field reporting.
- Strong communication, organization, documentation, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to work independently in an active construction environment.
- Willingness and ability to work a six-week onsite rotation.
- Ability to work a minimum of 40 hours per week while onsite, with additional hours as project conditions require.
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional Engineer license or Engineer-in-Training certification.
- Experience supporting BESS foundations, equipment pads, drainage systems, fire-access roads, and underground infrastructure.
- Experience with utility-scale substations or renewable energy interconnection facilities.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, Civil 3D, Bluebeam, Procore, or similar construction and engineering software.
- Knowledge of SWPPP requirements, erosion-control measures, and environmental compliance.
- Previous experience working in an owner’s representative, EPC, field engineering, or construction oversight capacity.
