First Nations Veterinary is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving animal welfare by providing free mobile spay/neuter and wellness clinics to Native American communities. While preventive medicine is the heart of our work, there are times when animals find themselves in urgent, life-threatening situations requiring immediate action.
We're looking for an Emergency Case Worker to serve as FNV's rapid-response coordinator for these rare but critical cases.
This is not a traditional part-time position. Emergency cases typically occur only 3–4 times per year, but when they do, they require someone who can respond immediately and devote their full attention to the case for up to 72 consecutive hours. If you're looking for consistent weekly hours, this isn't the role for you. However, if you're someone who thrives under pressure and wants to make an extraordinary impact a few times each year, we'd love to hear from you.
What You'll Do
When an emergency case arises, you'll become the primary coordinator responsible for seeing the animal safely through the crisis. Responsibilities include:
- Coordinating placement with shelters and rescue organizations throughout Oregon and Washington
- Safely transporting dogs and cats to shelters, rescues, foster homes, or veterinary facilities
- Mobilizing resources including foster homes, transport volunteers, rescue partners, and veterinary contacts
- Managing each case from initial notification through safe placement
- Communicating effectively with FNV leadership and partner organizations throughout the process
- Handling animals that may be frightened, injured, stressed, or otherwise challenging
What We're Looking For
The ideal candidate is:
- A Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT), Veterinary Assistant (VA), or someone with equivalent veterinary experience
- Calm, organized, and decisive under pressure
- Comfortable making independent decisions in rapidly changing situations
- An excellent communicator who can coordinate multiple moving pieces simultaneously
- Able to safely handle dogs and cats of varying sizes and temperaments
- Comfortable driving throughout Oregon and Washington when needed
- Available to respond on short notice and commit fully once a case begins
