The Transportation Worker 1 Equipment Operator in this position could report to any of the following county maintenance headquarters in Kanawha County: North Charleston Headquarters, Elkview Headquarters, or Saint Albans Headquarters. This position, under general supervision, will perform entry-level functions, working in the construction and maintenance of highways. Duties include: Driving a light truck or vehicle during regular operation as well as during snow removal and ice control (SRIC). Operating various equipment such as a fork truck, end loader, skid steer, rollers, utility tractor, brush chipper, as well as various hand tools. May fill in answering telephone and radio calls during SRIC. May be responsible for transporting materials or fuel to equipment. Providing traffic control by flagging on job sites. Selected applicants may be exposed to hazardous working conditions and inclement weather. Performs other related duties as required.

The selected applicant will be placed in a U.S. Department of Labor apprenticeship program. The selected applicant will be required, within 6 months of employment, to obtain a commercial driver's license (CDL). Progress through the apprenticeship program, as well as the opportunity for advancement to a higher classification, is dependent upon hours completed, proficiency in work, training completed, as well as obtaining and maintaining a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

The WVDOT is responsible for the planning, construction, maintenance, and regulation of over 35,000 miles of state roads. This duty may necessitate employees working irregular hours, shifts, weekends, and more than 40 hours per week, occasionally without prior notice.

In the area of assignment of Equipment Operator, a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) will be required within six (6) months of employment.
