This is a full time position based at the Davidson County Sherriff's Office in Nashville.
Purpose and Scope
The Adult Education Instructor plays a vital role in providing high-quality education and vocational training to individuals in correctional settings. This position focuses on equipping students with the academic, vocational, and life skills needed to pursue future success while ensuring instruction aligns with current state standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Teach a variety of educational classes in person and virtually.
- Provide instruction in:
- Adult Education Skills: Beginning literacy, mathematics, reading, writing, science, and social studies.
- Mathematics: Numbers/operations, measurement/geometry, data analysis, probability, algebra.
- Reading: Comprehension, inference/interpretation, analysis, synthesis/generalization.
- Writing: Organization, language facility, conventions, essay writing.
- Science: Life, physical, and earth science with emphasis on analysis and application.
- Social Studies: History, civics/government, economics, geography.
- Provide English as a Second Language (ESL) instruction.
- Deliver vocational soft skills, computer literacy, and Microsoft Office instruction.
- Administer TABE and HiSET pre-tests, practice tests, and assessments to determine educational levels and eligibility.
- Schedule students through JMS and maintain daily case notes.
- Utilize a variety of educational technologies and platforms, including Google Docs, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, WebEx, DRC, Burlington, and Orijin re-entry tablets.
- Ensure programs meet or exceed state standards while creating innovative, diverse instructional strategies.
- Compile monthly statistics and reports.
- Facilitate graduation ceremonies once or twice annually.
- Attend professional development workshops and trainings; obtain DRC certification and other credentials as requested.
- Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Education or closely related field.
- Computer literacy and experience using online teaching platforms.
- Prior experience teaching Adult Education or Vocational classes in a jail or prison setting highly beneficial
· Must attend orientation and security training prior to working if assigned to work in a correctional facility per facility training requirements.
Position Type & Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time salaried position working 40 hours per week in the Davidson County Sherriff’s Office Adult Education program.
Physical Demands and Work Environment
- Work is performed in a correctional environment. Daily interaction with incarcerated and alternative-sentenced populations is required.
- Standard office setting with normal safety precautions; environment is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated.
- Tasks may involve walking, standing, bending, and carrying light to medium items.
- Essential functions include the ability to:
- Teach Adult Education, ESL, and Vocational classes.
- Enter and manage data in computer systems.
- Operate virtual instruction equipment.
- Work effectively in close proximity to inmates.
- Maintain classroom management and address inappropriate behavior when necessary.
