Job Summary
The Inspector is responsible for monitoring and inspecting horizontal directional drilling (HDD) construction activities to ensure work is performed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, engineering drawings, client requirements, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations. This position serves as the owner’s or contractor’s representative in the field by documenting daily activities, verifying quality standards, identifying deficiencies, and ensuring compliance throughout all phases of construction.
Duties
- Perform daily inspections of HDD construction activities, including drilling, reaming, pullback operations, and restoration.
- Verify all work is completed in accordance with project plans, specifications, permits, and applicable industry standards.
- Monitor compliance with OSHA regulations, environmental requirements, and company safety policies.
- Observe and document drilling fluid management, containment practices, and environmental protection measures.
- Inspect job sites before, during, and after construction to identify deficiencies, safety concerns, or quality issues.
- Maintain detailed daily inspection reports documenting manpower, equipment, production, weather conditions, work performed, and project progress.
- Verify utility locates, bore path alignment, entry and exit points, and adherence to approved drill profiles.
- Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, field supervisors, subcontractors, utility owners, engineers, and clients regarding project status and inspection findings.
- Photograph and document project milestones, completed work, and any non-conforming conditions.
- Monitor traffic control setups to ensure compliance with approved traffic control plans.
- Confirm proper installation of conduit, pipe, vaults, handholes, and related underground infrastructure.
- Witness and document testing procedures, pressure testing, mandrel testing, and other quality assurance activities as required.
- Identify, document, and communicate deficiencies or corrective actions needed to maintain project quality.
- Track project quantities and assist with verification of completed work for billing purposes when requested.
- Attend project meetings, safety meetings, and pre-construction meetings as assigned.
- Ensure all required permits and documentation remain current and available on-site.
- Maintain accurate records using electronic reporting systems, tablets, GPS devices, and project management software.
- Travel between multiple project locations as required.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; additional technical or construction education preferred.
- Experience in horizontal directional drilling, underground utility construction, telecommunications, gas, electric, or water infrastructure preferred.
- Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, utility plans, specifications, and permits.
- Working knowledge of HDD construction methods, utility installation practices, and quality control procedures.
- Familiarity with OSHA safety standards and utility construction best practices.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office and electronic inspection/reporting software.
- Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions and walk uneven terrain.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and perform field inspections for extended periods.
Pay rate is up for negotiation.
Pay: $180.00 - $280.00 per day
