The New Mexico National Guard Youth ChalleNGe Academy (NMNGYCA) is a free, voluntary 17 ½ month alternative program for youth aged 16-18 that starts with a demanding 22-week quasi-military residential phase in which cadets from all over the state live in Roswell. This is followed by two (2) years of mentoring support to help graduates stay on track. The focus during the residential phase is on the development of the whole person through training of the eight (8) Core Components: Academic Excellence; Life Coping Skills; Job Skills; Responsible Citizenship; Leadership/Followership; Health and Hygiene; Physical Fitness; Service to Community, which are designed to instill healthy, lifelong skills that have been time-proven to lead to success. In this phase, all cadets will live in military style barracks, engage in daily fitness activities, work towards earning a HiSET (High School Equivalency Credential) or credit recovery, and are eligible to receive college credits in a vocational training program provided by Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell. Once a cadet graduates from the residential phase, the post-residential phase begins. This phase features monthly contact with an assigned mentor who helps the cadet maintain positive lifestyles and remain focused on completing their life goals by providing community resources in support of employment and educational opportunities for up to two (2) years.
Why does the job exist?
Cadre perform highly complex (senior-level) care and teach living skills to cadets at the NMNGYCA. Cadre provide daily supervision, leadership, guidance, and direction to cadets in a residential environment on a 24/7 basis and conduct and participate in daily physical training related exercises. Cadre are responsible for ensuring cadet compliance with policies and procedures in areas such as physical training, military protocol, service to the community, and daily living while on campus. Cadre work to redirect cadet behavior using behavioral modification techniques. Position will provide military structure, administer and teach the cadet disciplinary process and provide direct instruction in the National Guard Bureau's Eight Core Components. The incumbent will coordinate student daily and weekly schedules to ensure that academic, physical training and personal development are completed, and program goals are met.
How does it get done?
Cadre will:
- Apply military practices and principles of guiding and training for an assigned team of cadets while exercising responsibility for their daily activities.
- Instruct on the NMNGYCA Eight Core Components
- Provide military structure, discipline, and quasi-military training.
- Utilize behavioral intervention techniques when required and/or directed by the supervisor.
- Coordinate student daily and weekly schedules to ensure the academic, physical training and personal development are completed and program goals are met.
- Implement daily program activities, including physical fitness programs, instruction in military-like customs and courtesies, to include drill and ceremonies.
- Conduct cadet inspections and unit formations and rates cadet performance.
- Transport and supervise cadets to offsite activities when required.
- Provide general first aid, if necessary.

Minimum Qualification
High School Diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of experience working with at-risk youth, counseling assistant, teaching assistant, military experience, or Correctional facility. Graduation from Job ChalleNGe Academy may substitute for the one (1) year of experience. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university in a related field and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling one (1) year may substitute for the required experience.
Employment Requirements
Employment is subject to background check and is conditional pending results. Must possess and maintain a valid Driver's License with no limitations or restrictions. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification as a condition of continued employment.
This position is designated as safety sensitive. Employment is subject to pre-employment and random testing, in accordance with all terms and conditions of federal and state law, rules and regulations in relation to alcohol and/or drug testing. Employment is conditional pending results of pre-employment drug test.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a fast-paced environment on a large campus with multiple buildings, with youth aged 16-18 in a 24/7 environment that requires extended periods of sitting, standing, walking, lifting, and bending, and exposure to outdoors. Daily physical fitness with cadets. Shift work (including graveyard) and overtime may be required.
