Selection Procedure
Applications will be screened, and those candidates whose backgrounds best match the requirements of the position will be invited to participate in a competitive examination process, which may include any combination of the following: Written Exam (Multiple-choice) and a Technical/Oral Exam. Examination procedures are subject to change as deemed necessary by the Director of the Personnel Commission.
PUSD Classification Salary Range: $21.69 - $27.77 per hour
Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $21.69 per hour (Step 1) - $25.15 per hour (Step 4)
Candidates who pass all of the examination processes are ranked on an eligibility list according to their score(s). Selection for the position will be made from among the top three (3) ranks of candidates. The eligibility list will be used for hiring purposes in other vacancies in the same, or equivalent, job classification and will be active for six (6) months (Merit Rule 50.100.1).
The current vacancy is 8 hours per day, 10.5 months per year, at Westview High and is Benefits eligible.
Purpose Statement
The job of Athletic Program Assistant is done for the purposes of providing clerical and secretarial support duties within a high school athletics office involving independent judgment and action and requiring in-depth knowledge of the function or program; communicating program information to students, parents, staff, and the public; maintaining complete and accurate records; and assuring smooth and efficient office operations.
This job reports to the Assigned Supervisor.

High school diploma or equivalent
Equivalency
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to: graduation from high school and two (2) years of responsible secretarial or clerical experience involving frequent public contact. Experience working in a high school athletic department is desirable.

Skills, Knowledge, and abilities
SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating standard office equipment including using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.
KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios; understand written procedures, write routine documents, and speak clearly; and understand complex, multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: District organization, operations, policies, and objectives related to assigned functions; concepts of grammar and punctuation; telephone techniques and etiquette; common office machines; and office methods and practices.
ABILITY is required to schedule activities, meetings, and/or events; gather and/or collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing defined and similar processes; and operate equipment using standardized methods. Ability is also required to work with a wide diversity of individuals; work with similar types of data; and utilize job-related equipment. Some problem solving may be required to identify issues and select action plans. Problem solving with data may require independent interpretation; and problem solving with equipment is limited. Specific ability-based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: planning and organizing work; communicating with diverse groups; working with frequent interruptions; working as part of a team; maintaining confidentiality; being attentive to detail; meeting deadlines and schedules; adapting to changing work priorities; and training and providing work direction and guidance to others.
Working Environment
The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: sitting or standing for extended periods of time, physical mobility sufficient to move about the work environment (school office and campus) for sustained periods of time on hard flooring, stairs, ramps, uneven ground, hearing and speaking to exchange information in person or on the telephone, seeing to read, prepare and assure the accuracy of documents and view a computer monitor, some lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of supplies and equipment, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and bending at the waist, and reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally to retrieve and store files and supplies, and significant fine finger dexterity to operate a computer keyboard and other standard office equipment.
In accordance with Personnel Commission Rules and Regulations of Classified Service # 70.200.1, new employees to Poway Unified School District will be placed at Step 1 of the official salary range designated for the position. Any variances in initial placement are addressed in, and shall be carried out in agreement with, this rule.
