VACANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
LEAD TEACHER
PRESCHOOL AFTERCARE PROGRAM
Applications are being accepted for the position of Lead Teacher in the AfterCare program at the
BPS Early Childhood Center, an NAEYC accredited center! Position is a part-time schedule, M-F,
3:00-5:45pm. Additional hours considered. This is a non-bargaining unit position.
JOB SUMMARY AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead and supervise staff team.
Work collaboratively with AfterCare team to develop and maintain a safe, nurturing, and
positive environment for each child.
Demonstrate knowledge of child development.
Interact with children to develop positive relationships, extend play experiences, enhance
language development and build social emotional skills.
Act as a positive role model for children.
Monitor AfterCare group schedule and revise as needed.
Communicate effectively with parents.
Communicate effectively with BPS Principal of Early Learning.
Follow all BPS district policies as well as NAEYC, state licensing rules and guidelines.
Positively and professionally represent and promote Birmingham Public Schools programs.
Other duties as assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand and walk over 60% of the workday in order to supervise children throughout
daily activities, walk throughout the school, and participate in gym and playground activities.
Must have physical stamina to care for energetic young children.
Required to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, sit on the floor, run, and engage in other physical
activities.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Minimum of one of the following:
- A bachelor’s degree in early childhood education or child development or a bachelor’s
degree in Elementary Education with a ZA/ZS endorsement preferred. CDA or Associate’s
degree in child development earned or in progress accepted.
Experience working with young children is required.
Experience in a Lead role required.
Blood borne Pathogen, Playground Safety, Epi-Pen and Concussion training, in addition to any
other district and/or licensing training requirement, must be completed within 90 days of
employment. First Aid and CPR training will be provided.
State of Michigan Licensing Background Check, along with BPS background check and
fingerprinting, are required before an employee may work with children.
A physical and TB test must be obtained, passed, and documented with physician’s signature.
