About us: Independence, Inc. is a Center for Independent Living (CIL) established in 1978 in Lawrence, Kansas as a consumer-controlled, community-based, cross-disability, private, nonprofit agency that provides an array of independent living services that assist people with disabilities reach their independent living goals.
Our caseload is expanding in our statewide Kansas WORK and STEPS programs, and we are currently seeking an Independent Living Counselor (ILC)/Community Services Coordinator (CSC) to become part of our dedicated team of disability service providers in our Northeast Kansas territory. This position is based out of our Kansas City, Kansas office and will provide one-on-one services to consumers through various channels including in-person, virtual, email, text, and phone contacts. This position will work under the supervision of the WORK/ILC & STEPS/CSC Manager.
Essential Functions of the Position Include:
- Provide consumer services per KDHE and MCO requirements/guidelines on an ongoing basis. See WORK Program and STEPS Program Manuals on the KDHE website: https://www.kancare.ks.gov/members/benefits-services/working-healthy
- Serve as point of access for WORK and STEPS participants.
- Assess consumer service needs and ensure consumer understanding of the WORK and STEPS program policies.
- Assist consumers to complete necessary evaluation for program eligibility and service needs, including transition to HCBS waivers or wait lists if needed.
- Assist consumers in Individualized Budget development to accurately reflect services approved through the WORK Assessment
- Assist consumers in Individualized Service Plan development to accurately reflect services approved through the STEPS Assessment
- Assist consumers in development of Emergency Backup Plan for service delivery
- Assist consumers in development of required WORK and/or STEPS supporting documents for service delivery
- Assist consumers in all aspects of hiring and managing providers or personal assistants

Essential skills of the position include:
- Consumer-Centered Focus – ability to be attentive to the needs of consumers and provide reliable, knowledgeable information, support, and services to our consumers
- Communication – ability to actively listen to others and provide effective, and accurate oral and written communication
- Correct Grammar, Spelling, Sentence structure – effectively and accurately produce documents and professional written communications with attention to detail
- Attention to Detail and Analytical thinking – ability to accurately understand and document work and consumer details; work through a problem, barrier, or need with consumer, by using logical, systematic, and sequential approaches. Ability to use critical thinking skills when working with consumers to resolve conflict and assist in navigating various problems and systems
- Organization – ability to maintain documents, files, and consumer details in an organized, efficient manner that meet federal and state audit requirements
- Efficiency – ability to prioritize work and handle consumer needs, communication, files, and documents in a timely and effective manner
Note: Our organization's primary location is in Lawrence, KS and together, our ILC/CSC team serves the entire state of Kansas. This position is for Northeast Kansas, and light travel is required to meet directly with consumers in an assigned multi-county territory. Reliable transportation is required. Applicant must be able to work from our Kansas City, KS office and reside in the Northeast Kansas area (Wyandotte and Johnson County, etc.)
