POSITION: Paraprofessional

REPORTS TO: Special Education Department Chair

Purpose Statement:

Work involves providing support to classroom instruction through supervision, care and instruction of
students with disabilities in the general education and/or special education classroom; assisting in
implementing plans for instruction; monitoring student behavior during non-classroom time; providing
information to appropriate school personnel; and attending IEP meetings.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION: 

Minimum of sixty (60) hours of college education
 Possess an Illinois Educator License with Stipulations (Para), Substitute Teaching License, or

Professional Educator License required
 Targeted, job-related education with study in a job-related area preferred
 Experience with students with disabilities in both a general education and special education

classroom setting preferred

SKILL REQUIREMENTS/QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE: 

Ability to work cooperatively and in conjunction with assigned teacher, case manager
and administrators to provide academic and social-emotional/personal support to
students in the classroom as needed

 Ability to follow administrative, teacher, counselor, school healthcare specialist and
occupational and physical therapist directives regarding the physical needs of students

 Ability to assist teachers with classroom instruction and tutoring
 Knowledge of needs of students in special education
 Excellent organizational and management skills; ability to multi-task while meeting

deadlines and/or under changing job conditions
 Excellent problem solving skills, ability to take initiative, exercise independent judgment and

discretion in the performance of assigned duties
 Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills; ability to respond to faculty,

staff, students and the public with respect and tact
 Ability to maintain confidentiality
 Adhere to district and school policies, rules and regulations
 Demonstrate punctuality, good attendance and strong work ethics 
Other duties as assigned

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

This position monitors students during assigned periods within a variety of school environments (e.g.
classroom, job sites, rest rooms, hallways, bus loading zones, cafeteria, etc.) for the purpose of
maintaining a safe and positive learning environment. Under the supervision of assigned teachers or
coordinators, this position provides instruction to students in a variety of individual and group activities
(e.g. academic subjects, social skills, daily living skills, vocational skills, etc.) for the purpose of
reinforcing instructional objectives; implementing individual plans; and ensuring student success in
school.

This position administers tests, classwork, make-up work in support of students in the classroom. This
assignment can include assisting students who are medically fragile or have a physical disability in
matters of personal hygiene. This staff person attends all in-service presentations and department
meetings for the purpose of acquiring and/or conveying information relative to job functions. The
position maintains instructional materials and performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose
of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the school day.

Paraprofessional assignments may change based on program and student need. Changes may occur
daily, weekly or yearly.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT: 10 Month

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical
demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling; some climbing and balancing; some
stooping, kneeling, crouching and/or crawling and significant finger dexterity. Generally, the job
requires sitting, walking and standing. The job is performed under minimal temperature variations and
in a generally hazard free environment.
