Position Summary
The Machinist / CNC Operator III is an advanced manufacturing professional responsible for complex machine setups, process optimization, program modification, troubleshooting, and production of precision components. This role serves as a technical resource within the manufacturing department and supports leadership in achieving production, quality, and continuous improvement objectives.
The Machinist III is expected to mentor junior machinists, support new product introductions, assist with process development, and contribute to operational excellence initiatives.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities Advanced Machining Operations
· Perform complete machine setups and changeovers independently.
· Operate and troubleshoot CNC and manual manufacturing equipment.
· Optimize machining processes to improve efficiency, quality, and throughput.
· Modify programs, offsets, tooling selections, and machining parameters as necessary.
· Support complex and high-precision manufacturing operations.
Technical Expertise
· Interpret complex engineering drawings and GD&T requirements.
· Select appropriate tooling, fixtures, and machining strategies.
· Troubleshoot advanced machining, tooling, and quality issues.
· Support new product development and manufacturing implementation efforts.
Quality & Inspection
· Perform first article, in-process, and final inspections.
· Utilize advanced inspection and measurement techniques.
· Ensure compliance with engineering specifications and quality requirements.
· Drive corrective actions related to manufacturing quality issues.
Process Improvement
· Lead initiatives focused on:
o Productivity improvement
o Scrap reduction
o Process consistency
o Cycle time reduction
o Quality enhancement
· Recommend improvements to tooling, fixturing, and manufacturing methods.
Leadership & Mentorship
· Train and mentor Machinist I and II personnel.
· Assist in the development of work instructions and training materials.
· Share technical expertise and best practices across the department.
· Support onboarding and skills development efforts.
Documentation & Compliance
· Maintain accurate production, quality, and operational records.
· Support traceability and inventory accountability requirements.
· Ensure compliance with company quality standards and regulatory requirements.
· Participate in audits and continuous improvement activities as needed.
QualificationsRequired
· High school diploma or equivalent.
· 5+ years of CNC machining experience.
· Advanced knowledge of machining processes, tooling, materials, and manufacturing methods.
· Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills.
· Ability to independently perform complete setups and advanced troubleshooting.
Preferred
· Technical degree, apprenticeship, or machining certification.
· Experience in firearms, aerospace, defense, medical device, or other high-precision manufacturing environments.
· Experience with CNC programming, machine setup, and process optimization.
