ABOUT SCHOOL NURSING AT SMMUSD:
Our school site health offices are staffed by one of our health team members. The SMMUSD health team includes: Registered Credentialed School Nurses (RCSN), Health Office Specialists (HOS) and a Licensed Vocational Nurse (LVN). When a student enters one of our school health offices, they may encounter a RCSN, LVN or HOS. We collaboratively provide equitable care for a diverse student population across the district.
Each school site has a designated School Nurse managing and conducting health services. School Nurses are licensed Registered Nurses with a School Nurse Services Credential obtained through the and further education. RCSNs may oversee multiple schools.
EXAMPLES OF JOB DUTIES:
Create health care plans for students with health needs.
Case management of medically complex students as needed, including gathering necessary medical documentation from parents or medical providers.
Ongoing support, training and direction of unlicensed staff.
Medication administration to students and training of unlicensed staff to administer medication on campus in accordance with CA Education Code and SMMUSD policies and procedures.
Maintains health records of students and documents care provided in the electronic Student Information System.
Participant in site emergency response team. Provides emergency care for acutely ill and injured students.
Providing first aid training to staff including but not limited to topics such as Anaphylaxis, Asthma, Seizures and Diabetes.
Performing specialized health care procedures including but not limited to insulin injections, tube feedings, as necessary.
Collaborating with staff on the health problems of students and developing care plans to prevent complications and enhance a student achievement potential.
Counseling parents, pupils and school staff regarding health related issues to improve attendance and maintain wellness at school.
Work as a member of the multidisciplinary team for student assessments and special education needs.
Conducting physical health assessments and writing health reports for Individualized Education Plans.
Conducting annual mandated grade level color vision, vision and hearing screenings.
Management of communicable diseases in the school including tracking and reporting outbreaks to the LA Department of Public Health as required.
Establishing rapport and collaborating with community physicians and other health care providers to promote optimal health particularly for students with chronic conditions.
Working collaboratively with other district school nurses to provide a high level of care to students.
ENVIRONMENT
School setting. Possibility of driving/traveling to multiple sites in one day.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Possible prolonged periods of standing, and moving around a school campus.
Ability to stand, walk and bend over, kneel, crouch, reach overhead, grasp, push and pull. Move, lift and/or carry up to 30 pounds to shoulder height.
Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, operate standard office equipment, and use a telephone.
Read and understand rules and policies, labels, and instructions.
CERTIFICATION, EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Possess an active California Registered Nurse license in good standing.
Hold current BLS certification.
Minimum education is a Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing (BSN).
Knowledge of California immunization requirements for school-entry.
Experience with pediatrics, school age children or teens.
Ability to communicate effectively with a diverse community of students, staff and parents.
Possession of a valid Drivers’ License, use of insured vehicle or other reliable means of transportation.
Have a School Nurse Services Credential or willingness to pursue. Application for the California Preliminary School Nurse Services Credential must be completed and processed prior to start date.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT SALARY:
Salary varies depending on graduate semester level units, continuing education units (CEUs) and years of full-time experience.
Additional stipend of $2,530 for master's degree and $4,746 for doctorate.
