Typical job duties
- Climb utility poles and work from bucket trucks.
- Install, maintain, and repair overhead power, telephone, fiber-optic, or cable lines.
- Install poles, crossarms, insulators, transformers, and other line equipment.
- String and tension wires and cables between poles.
- Perform inspections and identify damaged or unsafe equipment.
- Troubleshoot outages and service interruptions.
- Replace damaged poles, wires, cables, and hardware.
- Operate bucket trucks, diggers, winches, and other specialized equipment.
- Read blueprints, maps, and construction plans.
- Follow strict electrical, fall-protection, and OSHA safety procedures.
- Work outdoors in all weather conditions and sometimes respond to emergency outages.
- Coordinate with ground crews, supervisors, utility companies, and customers.
Physical requirements
The job can be very physically demanding. Linemen commonly need to:
- Climb poles and ladders.
- Lift and carry heavy equipment.
- Work at significant heights.
- Have good balance, strength, and hand coordination.
- Work in heat, cold, rain, and sometimes at night.
- Be comfortable working around high-voltage electrical equipment.
Pay: $35.50 - $37.19 per hour
