Onsite Safety Specialist
Location: Milwaukee, WI | Project Site: Large-Scale Data Center | Type: Full-Time
Overtime hours approved, per diem for out of area candidates
Position Overview
J.M. Brennan, Inc. is seeking an experienced Safety Specialist to support a large, fast-paced data center construction project in the Milwaukee area. This is a primarily on-site role responsible for implementing, monitoring, and enforcing safety programs and regulatory compliance across all phases of mechanical construction. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and comfortable working in a dynamic, multi-trade environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the primary on-site safety resource for the data center project, ensuring compliance with OSHA standards, company safety policies, and project-specific safety plans.
- Conduct daily job site safety inspections and document findings; issue and follow up on corrective actions in a timely manner.
- Lead and facilitate toolbox talks, safety orientations, and pre-task planning sessions for field crews.
- Investigate incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions; prepare thorough written reports and implement corrective/preventive measures.
- Coordinate with the project superintendent, foremen, and subcontractors to integrate safety into all work activities.
- Monitor and enforce proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) across all trades.
- Maintain safety records, logs, and documentation including OSHA 300 logs, permits, and inspection reports.
- Support development and implementation of Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Safe Work Plans.
- Manage confined space, hot work, lockout/tagout (LOTO), fall protection, and other permit programs on site.
- Liaise with owners, general contractors, and regulatory agencies as needed.
- Assist with drug and alcohol testing program administration as required.
- Participate in project safety meetings and contribute to continuous safety improvement efforts.
Qualifications
Experience
- Minimum 5 years of construction safety experience
Certifications (Preferred)
- OSHA 30-Hour Construction (required); OSHA 500/510 or other trainer certifications a plus.
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), or Construction Health and Safety Technician (CHST) preferred.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification.
Skills & Competencies
- Thorough knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1926 construction standards and applicable safety regulations.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills — ability to effectively engage with field personnel, management, and ownership teams.
- Ability to identify hazards and implement practical, workable solutions in a fast-moving construction environment.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite; experience with safety management software a plus.
- Self-directed with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
Work Environment & Physical Requirements
- Primarily on-site role in Port Washington — regular outdoor and indoor construction site exposure.
- Must be able to access all areas of the project site, including elevated work areas, confined spaces, and crawl spaces.
- Ability to stand, walk, climb, and lift up to 50 lbs as required.
- Must be willing to work flexible hours, including early starts or extended days as project needs require.
