DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The Finish Grade Operator is responsible for safely operating motor graders, dozers, skid steers, and other assigned equipment to complete precise final grading work in accordance with project plans, specifications, elevations, slopes, and tolerances.
Essential functions include:
- Perform finish grading of building pads, roadways, parking areas, sidewalks, curb lines, drainage features, slopes, trenches, and other construction surfaces.
- Read and interpret construction plans, grade stakes, cut-and-fill markings, elevations, slopes, and project specifications.
- Use GPS machine-control systems, laser levels, grade checkers, and other measuring equipment to establish and maintain accurate grades.
- Operate equipment smoothly and efficiently to produce uniform surfaces while minimizing over-excavation, rework, material waste, and damage to surrounding improvements.
- Confirm work areas are properly prepared and identify underground utilities, overhead hazards, structures, personnel, equipment, and other potential obstructions before beginning work.
- Maintain proper drainage, compaction, elevations, transitions, and surface tolerances required for the next phase of construction.
- Coordinate with grade checkers, laborers, surveyors, foremen, truck drivers, and other equipment operators to maintain safe and efficient production.
- Perform required preoperational inspections and identify mechanical defects, leaks, damaged components, or unsafe operating conditions.
- Document and report equipment defects through the company’s established inspection and maintenance reporting process.
- Perform routine operator maintenance, including checking fluids, cleaning windows and cameras, greasing designated components, and maintaining the cab and equipment in an orderly condition.
- Operate equipment within manufacturer limitations and company safety requirements.
- Maintain awareness of changing ground conditions, soft areas, excavations, slopes, traffic, weather, visibility, and personnel working near the equipment.
- Use a spotter when visibility is restricted or when operating near employees, structures, vehicles, utilities, or other hazards.
- Stop work when conditions are unsafe, the required grade cannot be confirmed, or the work may damage existing facilities or completed improvements.
- Assist with loading, spreading, shaping, compacting, and relocating soil, aggregate, gravel, base material, and other construction materials as assigned.
- Protect completed work, survey controls, grade stakes, utilities, drainage systems, curbs, structures, and nearby property from damage.
- Follow traffic-control plans, jobsite rules, environmental requirements, and all applicable company, state, and federal safety requirements.
- Communicate equipment conditions, grade concerns, production delays, hazards, incidents, and changes in site conditions to supervision.
- Maintain reliable attendance and report to assigned jobsites prepared to perform work safely and productively.
- Perform other related equipment-operation and site-support duties consistent with the position.
The Finish Grade Operator must consistently demonstrate the skill and judgment necessary to achieve final-grade tolerances while protecting employees, equipment, utilities, completed work, and surrounding property.
