The work of the kitchen assistant is key for the success of the Montessori Environment. Here are some topics and descriptions that will aid the Assistant in understanding her role and work. I. Prepared Environment.
a. Order and Clean – Maintain the kitchen, washing area and Foyer.
b. Kitchen utensils clean and put away in their place
II. Working with Children:
a. Children will need you to guide them.
b. Explain how to use equipment properly.
III. Communication :
a. Communicate any necessary issues with Kitchen Manager
b. Communicate any necessary issue with Guides in a positive & proactive manner
Prepared Environment.
c. Order and Cleaning: To keep the kitchen in order will help you work in a safe
manner.
1. Makes sure that Health Codes are followed and we pass all Health Inspections
2. Makes sure that all personnel is aware of Fire Extinguishers and how to use them
3. Turn off Air Conditioning at the end of the day before going home!
4. Prep work – wash, clean, dice food.
5. Help the Kitchen manager
6. Purchase and pick-up food with the guidance from Kitchen Manager (help stay in budget)
7. Make sure food arrives on time to the classrooms
8. Help pick up dishes from classrooms
9. Help wash dishes
11. Wash dirty laundry
12. Make sure everything is put away clean and in its place at the end of the day
14. Sweep and Mop kitchen and Foyer area
15. Help with inventory – food, cleaning items, soaps, paper towels
16. Help maintain kitchen equipment clean
17. Cleans Refrigerator and Microwave as needed.
18. Read, work and conduct oneself within the guidelines of the “Faculty and Staff Handbook”.

The role of the kitchen assistant is to assist the kitchen manager in his/her abilities to orchestrate a well-run kitchen. Each kitchen manager requires their Assistant help in unique ways, but generally the majority of the time, The Kitchen Assistant spends their time preparing, cleaning, and assisting the
kitchen manager.
