POSITION DESCRIPTION:
The Central Midlands Council of Governments (CMCOG) is seeking an experienced person to serve as an Accounts Payable Specialist. Reporting to the CMCOG Director of Finance, the Accounts Payable Specialist will be responsible for maintaining the day-to-day operations of accounts payable and assisting with general accounting, while helping to support the finance needs of all CMCOG departments. The Specialist will also support the operations of the Finance Department in other capacities such as reconciling accounts, maintaining financial records, and preparing necessary report.
JOB RESPONSIBLITIES:
- Complete all accounts payable for CMCOG, including researching payments and vendor communication,
- Prepare journal entries to correct errors,
- Maintain W-9s and prepare annual 1099s,
- Track and perform unclaimed property required reporting and correspondence,
- Assist in preparing monthly & quarterly financial and grant reports,
- Cross train as backup to support Accounts Receivables,
- Assist with balance sheet account reconciliations,
- Comply with local, state, and federal government reporting requirements,
- Participate in certification reviews and audits for various federal grant programs,
- Receive instruction and direction as a member of the accounting team,
- Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
DESIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- Bachelor Degree in Accounting from an accredited college or university is preferred.
- Two (2) to Three (3) years of responsible experience in accounting, preferably in the public non–profit, or governmental sector.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
SKILLS NECESSARY:
- Technologically competent, including working knowledge of Windows, Microsoft office Suite: Word, Excel and Outlook;
- Ability to operate standard office equipment, including but not limited to, computers, telephone systems, calculators, copiers and facsimile machines;
- Interpret, apply and explain complex concepts to include codes, regulations and ordinances;
- Make sound, independent judgments within established policies and procedures;
- Ability to effectively organize/prioritize work and manage time in order to meet deadlines;
- Takes ownership of procedures and identify areas of improvement;
- Financial analysis skills and working knowledge of US GAAP.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing as well as interact with employees, associates, government officials and the general public in an effective and professional manner.
