The Supervising Clinical Psychiatrist provides physician oversight and supervision of advanced practice providers, including psychiatric nurse practitioners (PMHNPs), nurse practitioners (NPs), and physician assistants (PAs), in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. This role is primarily supervisory and administrative in nature and does not require routine direct patient care responsibilities.
The Supervising Clinical Psychiatrist ensures that behavioral health services are delivered safely, effectively, and in compliance with clinical, regulatory, and payer requirements. The physician serves as a collaborating and supervising physician for rendering providers and supports quality assurance and clinical excellence initiatives throughout the practice.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide physician supervision and oversight of psychiatric nurse practitioners, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants delivering behavioral health services.
- Review and approve clinical protocols, treatment pathways, and standards of care related to psychiatric and behavioral health conditions.
- Be available for consultation regarding complex clinical cases as required by practice policy and applicable regulations.
- Conduct periodic chart reviews and quality assurance audits in accordance with regulatory requirements and organizational policies.
- Ensure compliance with federal, state, payer, and accreditation standards.
- Participate in peer review, utilization management, and quality improvement activities.
- Assist in developing and updating behavioral health policies and procedures.
- Support risk management initiatives and promote patient safety.
- Collaborate with administrative leadership to optimize clinical operations and patient outcomes.
- Maintain all required supervising physician agreements and documentation.
- Support medication management protocols and psychiatric treatment standards.
Qualifications
- Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited institution.
- Completion of an accredited residency program in Psychiatry.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Psychiatry.
- Active and unrestricted medical license in the applicable state.
- Current DEA registration, including authority to prescribe controlled substances, as applicable.
- Experience supervising advanced practice providers preferred.
- Strong knowledge of psychiatric clinical standards and behavioral health regulations.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Comprehensive knowledge of psychiatric disorders, psychopharmacology, and evidence-based treatment modalities.
- Familiarity with physician supervision requirements for psychiatric nurse practitioners and physician assistants.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
- Ability to review clinical documentation and maintain quality standards.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.

Compensation: Competitive compensation commensurate with experience, board certification, and supervisory responsibilities.
