Steel Detailer – Structural Steel & Miscellaneous Metals
LDH Construction / LDH Steel is looking for an in-house Steel Detailer to support our structural steel and miscellaneous metals fabrication work in St. Helens, Oregon.
We are a small, growing steel fabrication and installation company serving commercial, public works, industrial, school, healthcare, and municipal projects throughout Oregon and the Portland metro area. Our work includes structural steel, stairs, rails, canopies, ladders, embeds, HSS frames, platforms, supports, and custom miscellaneous metals.
This position is ideal for someone who understands how steel is actually fabricated and installed, not just how to draft lines on a screen. We are looking for a detailer who can help bridge the gap between contract drawings, field conditions, shop fabrication, and GC/architect/engineer coordination.
Position Summary
The Steel Detailer will prepare and coordinate shop drawings, fabrication drawings, submittal packages, RFIs, revisions, field measurements, and internal shop information for LDH Steel projects.
The right candidate will be comfortable working directly with ownership, project managers, fabricators, installers, outside engineers, general contractors, and sometimes outside detailing support. This is a key in-house role with room to grow as our detailing and project coordination systems continue to develop.
Responsibilities
- Prepare steel and miscellaneous metals shop drawings for fabrication and installation.
- Detail stairs, rails, ladders, embeds, bent plates, HSS frames, canopies, supports, platforms, and small structural steel packages.
- Review architectural, structural, and civil drawings for steel scope, conflicts, dimensions, attachment points, and field conditions.
- Create clear fabrication drawings, part drawings, material lists, bolt/weld information, and erection/installation drawings.
- Coordinate RFIs, submittal revisions, field measurements, and drawing changes.
- Work directly with shop fabricators and field installers to resolve constructability issues.
- Assist with material takeoffs, drawing reviews, and scope clarification during estimating or project handoff.
- Maintain consistent drawing standards, part marks, revision tracking, and project documentation.
- Coordinate with outside detailers when needed and review their drawings for accuracy and completeness.
- Help develop LDH’s internal detailing standards, templates, and drafting workflows.
Required Qualifications
- Experience preparing steel or miscellaneous metals shop drawings.
- Ability to read and understand architectural and structural contract drawings.
- Strong understanding of steel fabrication, welds, bolts, anchors, connections, and field installation constraints.
- Proficiency with AutoCAD or similar drafting software.
- Proficiency with Bluebeam or similar PDF markup/review software.
- Ability to produce clear, organized, buildable drawings for shop and field crews.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to catch conflicts before they become shop or field problems.
- Good communication skills with project managers, fabricators, installers, GCs, engineers, and architects.
- Ability to manage multiple projects and revisions at the same time.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Advance Steel, Tekla, SDS2, Revit, Navisworks, or similar steel detailing/modeling software.
- Experience detailing stairs, handrails, guardrails, platforms, ladders, embeds, and miscellaneous metals.
- Fabrication, welding, ironwork, or field installation background.
- Familiarity with AISC, AWS, OSHA, ADA, and common commercial construction standards.
- Experience creating bills of material, cut lists, part marks, erection drawings, and submittal packages.
- Experience with public works, schools, healthcare, municipal, or commercial construction projects.
Compensation
Pay is dependent on experience.
Pay: $36–$46 per hour DOE
Approximate annualized equivalent: $75,000–$95,000, based on a full-time schedule before overtime.
Highly qualified candidates with strong steel detailing, checking, modeling, or project coordination experience may be considered above this range.
Depending on final classification and experience, this position may be structured as salary or hourly equivalent.
Schedule & Work Location
This is a full-time hybrid position based out of our shop in St. Helens, Oregon.
We are located in a rural Columbia County setting, away from the congestion of downtown Portland but still within reach of the Portland metro area. Our shop is a practical, hands-on steel fabrication environment where the detailer can work directly with the people building and installing the steel.
We expect this role to include a mix of remote drafting time and in-shop coordination. Depending on project needs, the detailer should plan to work from the shop approximately 1–2 days per week for field/shop coordination, drawing reviews, project handoff, and fabrication support. Additional in-shop time may be needed during onboarding, complex projects, field-measure coordination, or major submittal pushes.
After training and once workflows are established, work-from-home flexibility will be available for focused drafting and drawing production.
Benefits
Benefits may include:
- Paid time off
- Paid holidays
- Health insurance options
- Retirement plan options
- Professional development / software training
- Long-term growth opportunity within the company
Final benefits package will be discussed during the hiring process.

We are looking for someone who wants ownership of the detailing process and wants to help build a stronger in-house steel operation.
