Job Summary: Under the general direction of the Nurse Supervisor, performs public health nursing activities as a school nurse or a community nurse in a public health clinic, collaborates and consults with the City Medical Advisor, and clinic physician, conducts public health programs in schools, homes, or institutions; does related work as required.
Supervision Received: Under the general direction of the Nurse Supervisor.
Supervision Exercised: May be required to supervise non-professional aides or Certified Nursing Assistants in student care, housekeeping, filing or related non-nursing duties.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
- Participates in the full spectrum of public health prevention, promotion, and maintenance activities in the schools and community health setting.

Communicate and collaborate with private, community and school based healthcare providers.

Counsels and educate parents on prevention and treatment of pediatric health issues.

Interprets the public health nursing service and programs to school or community groups and participates in general health education and promotion activities conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services.
- Participates in staff education conferences, in-service education, training programs, and attends related professional meetings and conferences.

Maintains extensive health records, documents to track statistics and files reports accordingly.

Obtains and follows doctor’s orders for medications administration and treatments.

Conducts mandated and non-mandated screenings and make referrals.

Sets up equipment and assists with examinations.

Develops instructive materials, coordinates and provides health instruction programs

Assists in enforcement of quarantine procedures and re-entry to school at the discretion and direction of the Director of Health and School Medical Advisor.

Reviews immunizations and physicals for school children to decipher compliance relating to school admission guidelines

Administers first aid and refers for treatment to physician when necessary; may require transferring students to or from wheelchair. May arrange emergency transportation to home, clinic or hospital.

Perform nursing assessment of student illness or injuries and provides care as directed by the Medical Advisor.

Participates as a member of the planning and placement team and 504 team providing guidance for accommodations and individualized nursing healthcare plan as needed.

Conducts home visits for students with significant medical needs to prepare and plan for admission to school.

Arranges for and conducts various public health clinics including administration of vaccine.

Community Nurse conducts outbreak and epidemiology investigations, infectious disease prevention and management as well as home visits as needed in consultation with medical advisor, physician, APRN and DPH.

Performs related duties as required.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION
Graduation from an accredited school of nursing and at least two (2) years of full-time nursing experience.
NOTE: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s or master’s degree in nursing may substitute for the one (1) year of full-time nursing experience.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENT: At time of appointment, licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut.
