Steel + Spark is a rapidly scaling manufacturer that designs and builds sustainable, off-grid, modular housing using repurposed shipping containers. Our prefab units range from backyard studios and Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) to large-scale transitional housing for the homeless and disaster relief. We are passionate about the need for innovative housing solutions. Our technology driven manufacturing process focuses on quick-to-market, sustainable housing strategies. The Steel + Sparks team is made up of licensed architects, engineers, developers, general contractors, and skilled tradesmen.
We are a rapidly growing business, and our headcount will increase from approximately 30 employees to 50 employees in the next few months. As a result, we are seeking a full-time Human Resources Generalist to join our growing team. In this role, you will play a pivotal part in shaping a positive, high-performance workplace culture. You will manage day-to-day HR operations and support employes and managers across the full employee lifecycle.
About the Job
Perform duties at the professional HR level in the following functional areas: recruitment, onboarding, benefits and 401(k) administration, training, performance management, employee relations, policy development and implementation, employment law compliance, leave administration, safety and workers’ compensation, and employee record maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
- Assist in the recruitment process by coordinating job postings, reviewing resumes, scheduling and conducting telephone and onsite interviews, performing background and reference checks, and ensuring a positive experience for applicants.
- Conduct new employee orientations to ensure employees gain an understanding of the organization, policies and procedures, benefit plans, and complete all relevant forms/documents.
- Administer all health benefit plans and the 401(k) retirement plan. Process required documentation to ensure accurate record keeping and proper deductions. Resolve employee concerns related to health and retirement plans by functioning as a liaison with various insurance carriers and plan administrators.
- Assist with the development and implementation of performance evaluation and reward systems. Maintain and monitor systems after implementation.
- Develop and administer all employment related policies and practices to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state laws in order to minimize risk and liability to the company. Ensure the Employee Handbook is current.
- Identify all new laws and regulations that impact employment practices, analyze the impact at the company, and make recommendations to management to ensure compliance.
- Coordinate the implementation and maintenance of the HRIS (Paychex).
- Administer extended absences to balance employee well-being with business continuity. Process leave requests, coordinate with payroll for compensation, and facilitate the return-to-work process. Ensure compliance with relevant state and federal employment laws (e.g. FMLA, ADA, etc.).
- Conduct training on human resource related topics and/or partner with training experts who can conduct training for employees on specific topics.
Required Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration or a related field.
- 3+ years of progressive experience as a Human Resources Generalist or similar role in a manufacturing environment.
- Deep understanding of state and federal employment laws and HR best practices.
- Excellent conflict resolution, problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills.
- Proficiency with HRIS platforms (Paychex preferred) and Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
- High integrity and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality regarding sensitive employee and company data.
Pay: $75,000.00 - $95,000.00 per year
