Position Summary
UpWaste is seeking a dependable, safety-conscious Fleet Maintenance Technician / Roll-Off Driver to maintain our fleet of Kenworth T880 roll-off trucks and roll-off containers while also supporting driving operations as needed.
The primary focus of this position is preventive maintenance, inspections, light-to-intermediate mechanical repairs, welding, container maintenance, and general fleet upkeep. The employee may also operate a roll-off truck to deliver and pick up dumpsters, move equipment, or transport trucks to dealerships and outside repair facilities.
This is an ideal position for someone who is mechanically skilled, comfortable working independently, and willing to perform a combination of shop, yard, and driving responsibilities. Major engine, transmission, emissions, or other specialized repairs may be coordinated with dealerships or qualified outside repair facilities.
Key ResponsibilitiesFleet Maintenance and Repairs
- Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on Kenworth T880 roll-off trucks and related equipment.
- Complete oil changes, filter replacements, fluid changes, lubrication, and other routine services.
- Inspect, change, rotate, and repair tires in accordance with company procedures and applicable safety requirements.
- Conduct basic system checks and diagnostics on truck electrical, hydraulic, air, starting, charging, lighting, and other operating systems.
- Inspect roll-off hoists, hydraulic hoses, fittings, cylinders, controls, tarping systems, PTO components, and related equipment.
- Identify mechanical problems and complete repairs that are within the employee’s training and capabilities.
- Repair or replace common truck components, including lights, batteries, belts, hoses, mirrors, mudflaps, latches, brackets, body components, and other fixed or bolt-on parts.
- Perform basic welding, fabrication, and metal repairs on roll-off containers, truck components, doors, hinges, latches, rails, and related equipment.
- Repair and paint, containers, repair surfaces, and other fleet equipment as needed.
- Inspect roll-off containers for structural damage, worn floors, damaged doors, broken hinges, missing reflectors, and other safety concerns.
- Keep trucks and containers safe, clean, functional, and presentable.
- Coordinate major or specialized repairs with management, dealerships, tire vendors, and outside repair facilities.
- Transport trucks and equipment to dealerships, service centers, inspection facilities, or vendor locations.
- Maintain accurate maintenance, inspection, repair, and parts records.
- Communicate equipment condition, repair needs, downtime, and recommended maintenance to management.
- Maintain an organized, clean, and safe shop, yard, and work area.
- Assist with tracking commonly used parts, fluids, filters, tires, welding supplies, and other maintenance materials.
Roll-Off Driving and Operations
- Safely operate Kenworth T880 roll-off trucks to deliver, exchange, relocate, and collect dumpsters when assigned.
- Perform required pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
- Confirm that containers are properly secured before transportation.
- Maintain accurate records of deliveries, pickups, service requests, mileage, inspections, and equipment issues.
- Navigate difficult driving conditions, including tight residential areas, construction sites, uneven surfaces, off-road locations, and challenging weather.
- Communicate professionally with customers to confirm container locations, service instructions, access requirements, and scheduling details.
- Protect customer property, including driveways, pavement, fencing, landscaping, overhead structures, and surrounding vehicles.
- Follow all traffic laws, DOT requirements, company policies, and safe operating procedures.
- Immediately report accidents, property damage, injuries, equipment failures, or other safety concerns to management.
Qualifications
- Valid Class A or Class B Commercial Driver’s License.
- Acceptable driving record and ability to meet company and insurance requirements.
- Previous experience operating roll-off trucks, heavy-duty commercial vehicles, or similar equipment is strongly preferred.
- Previous experience performing preventive maintenance and repairs on medium- or heavy-duty trucks is preferred.
- Mechanical knowledge of diesel trucks, hydraulic systems, air systems, electrical systems, and commercial vehicle components.
- Ability to perform basic welding, fabrication, grinding, surface preparation, and painting.
- Ability to use hand tools, power tools, welding equipment, diagnostic tools, jacks, lifting equipment, and other fleet-maintenance equipment safely.
- Ability to recognize repairs that require a dealership, specialized technician, or outside service provider.
- Understanding of commercial vehicle inspection requirements, shop safety practices, and applicable DOT regulations.
- Ability to operate and troubleshoot technology and software used in commercial vehicles and fleet operations.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.

Physical Requirements
- Ability to perform physical work involving standing, walking, climbing, bending, kneeling, crouching, reaching, pushing, and pulling.
- Ability to lift and move tires, tools, truck parts, container components, and other heavy materials using appropriate assistance or lifting equipment.
- Ability to enter and exit commercial trucks repeatedly throughout the workday.
- Ability to work underneath, around, and on commercial trucks and roll-off containers.
- Comfortable working outdoors and in a shop or yard environment during hot, cold, wet, dusty, snowy, or windy conditions.
- Comfortable working around grease, oil, welding fumes, vehicle exhaust, noise, and moving equipment while using required personal protective equipment.
- Ability to sit for extended periods while driving.
Schedule
- Full-time or part-time opportunities may be available.
- Schedule may vary based on maintenance requirements, customer demand, weather, and operational needs.
- Flexibility may be required for early mornings, weekends, after-hours repairs, emergency maintenance, or unexpected equipment issues.
