Lineman
Summary
This person will perform tasks involving physical labor in aerial copper and fiber cable installation construction projects.
Accountability
This person must be a reliable, dependable employee who will be on time to work each day. Excessive tardiness and/or absence will not be tolerated and may result in termination of employment.
Essential Functions
- Performs a variety of tasks involving manual labor.
- Moving (lifting, pushing, pulling) heavy objects (≤75 lbs.) with or without assistance.
- Frequently stand, sit, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl for extended periods of time.
- Communicate (talk and hear) well with others.
- Use hands to finger, handle, feel, and lift.
- Use a variety of hand and power tools to install various materials.
Administrative Functions
This position has no administrative functions.
Supervisory Responsibility
This position will require supervision of laborers assisting in the installation of materials.
Work Environment
Our construction projects are teamwork driven from start to finish. This requires a person to be able to communicate and work with various people throughout their workday. This person must be very goal orientated and results driven as daily objectives are established every morning and must be met to ensure timely completion of the overall project.
This person could be exposed to the following hazards:
- Fall protection • Moving/lifting heavy objects (≤75 lbs.)
- Trenching and excavation • Respiratory
- Scaffolding • Extreme noise
- Confined space • Sharp objects
- Electrical • Moving parts
- Ladders • Extreme weather conditions

Physical Demands
This person will lift, push and pull large, heavy and awkward objects (≤75 lbs.) occasionally. They will also walk and stand for long periods of time and perform physical labor under adverse field conditions. This person must have good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination as well as excellent physical stamina.
Needs to be physically capable of climbing poles when installation cannot be reached by truck.
Safety Functions
Heavy Constructors, Inc. maintains a proactive safety culture throughout each one of our construction projects. All personnel are required to participate in the Daily Hazard Analysis and Stretch Routine
(Morning Huddle) each day before work may begin. Throughout the workday, personnel must see that the Hierarchy of Hazard Controls are being utilized and followed.
Other essential safety functions include:
- Maintain excellent communication with coworkers about potential safety and health hazards.
- See that all Personal Protective Equipment is being provided and utilized if necessary.
- See that all other company and federally regulated safety programs and standards are being followed.
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours are immediately affected by future workload and deadlines.
Typical hours of operation are 7am to 5pm Monday thru Friday.
Required Education/Certification/Knowledge
- Lineman Apprentice (required)
- CDL (manual transmission)
Knowledge in all phases of aerial work including setting and anchoring poles, putting up strand, and lashing cables.
How to operate digger truck and bucket trucks.
Splicing of copper cable preferred (will train).
Required Tools
Hand tools and power tools will be supplied.
Travel
This person will travel throughout the Black Hills Area on a daily basis.
